hi there,

I am staying in my 2-berth caravan a lot all year round and am thinking of getting a generator to be independent off mains.

I have been known to run my little fan heater with 2000 Watts at times during the winter as a booster for gas heating. so I guess it would have to be a 2000Watts generator?

What else do I need to consider?

2-stroke/4-stroke? (sorry I am not into engines but I think these are 2 types available?)

Would it be advisable to run the fridge off gas during the winter?

What brands are low-noise so I don'tget  the neighbours annoyed?

What price?

Many thanks!

4 stroke are quieter than 2, honda is the best but costing over a grand for a 2kw one, as for the heater i wouldnt expect any site would let you run a genny through the night to power the elec side.

Hi,
Before the anti generator crew come on im gonna tell you the truth. Pulling 2000watts from a camping generator is gonna cost a lot in fuel cost of machine and if you use a site generator there will be a lot of noise. However if you get a honda EU10i and put it on eco throttle people won't even know you have it on. However you should get a fan heater with a "night setting" that consumes about 700w. Honda inverter generators are absolutely the best for camping, their electrical output is spot on - their fuel economy cannot be matched and they are unbelievably quiet. However you are looking at £500 for a 1000w model and about £800 for the 2000w model. However there is a brand called kipor which do pretty much identical models to the honda with the same specs for half the price. But the honda has the better quality over the kipors any day. Don't be fooled by generators ratings they say 2000w max but they can only supply this about of current for a 10 seconds. What you should look at is the continuous rating which on the honda eu20i is 1700w. It will supply this all day. Another issue is electrical output. cheap non inverter generators and generators without an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) may harm your vans charger and other sensitive electronic such as televisions and computers. Inverter generators are the best as they give super clean power just like a plug in your house. AVR's have a good amount of regulation on their voltage and usually are not a worry. If i have one tip with generators it would to not run them out of fuel with appliances connected this will kill them. When storing a generator for more than a month before you put it away let it run out of fuel without anything connected this will prevent old petrol clogging the carb. If you need any help please ask.
