Hi,

Do any of you fine folk have one of these and are they any good?

http://www.outwell.dk/Furniture.aspx?b=Outwell&bid=2&lid=1&l=en-GB&ProductId=1184&pid=6&CatId=318

They look the part but do they give out much heat ?

I have never seen one but if it hangs from the roof of the tent and heat rises I suspect it may take a long time to heat a whole tent in cold weather.

Now thats a good point Bob61

However, working on the patio heater principle they seem to work ok....or is it just the ones at our local that seem to work well when in fact its the gargle that keeps us warm outside

Good point though.. hmmmmm is it a gimmick ??

It';s a halogen heater, so it heats primarily via radiation (infra red radiation, same way as the sun warms us effectively), like as those old high up on the wall bathroom heaters. So the heat doesn't just stay at the top of the tent

The benfit of this type of heating is that as long as you are near enough to the heater, you fell nice and warm, though not such a good way of heating a room up as it doesn't warm the air directly like a fan heater or a central heating radiator. It will heat the room, just not so quickly.

They are good for instant heat, the advantage is that you don't need to heat the whole tent to a higher temp to feel warm, but if you move away from the heater then it can feel quite a bit colder.

Never used one of these though. This is just theory :-)

This one says 1.5 kw, which is 1 and half typical bars on an electric fire, if you have ever sat in front of one - which probably many people don't any more :-)

There are a couple of people on here that have them and say they are really good , what put me off buying one was the amount it hangs down off the tent as it has to stay at a certain length from the canvas ,and I think it would get on my nerves walking around it all the time, and also I was concerned that if you put a table underneath it so you can sit around the warmth that it would burn the table.

Ive used one in our Bear lake 6 and it kept us warm as toast on some pretty cool nights. It gives a good quality of light, not too harsh. No problem to stick a table under it in the evening if you're drinking indoors-as I always am.  A good buy but quite bulky in a car thats already stuffed full of a big tent.

I've also used it outside in the garden as a patio heater.

Glynnis, can you tell me where you bought yours and how much they are?  Think you may be the lady who lives near me?

Veronica
