A tent hook up is a box with basically plug sockets in it but also and most important an RCD breaker device. The other end has a special plug on it that plugs in to the campsite like a caravan does. Avalible at most good camping shops but not cheap.
I put a post on for you on your other subject regarding heaters. But camping nutcase has explained it much better than I did.
A hook up (in my opinion) is one of the best things you will buy - we have a fridge, light, small electric travel kettle, heater, radio (not all running at the same time I might add !!) and it just makes life a little easier.
£54 is pretty good for a single socket EHU - expect to pay £70-£100 for a three socket one.
The cost comes from the price of the components used - if you compare what you see in the shop with buying just the bits to make one up from a good discount supplier like Screwfix, buying the ready-made one in the shop works out a lot cheaper!
And you need those expensive components because you're planning to use electricity in a far more hostile environment than inside your brick-built, fundamentally waterproof, house.
Just found one on ebay dont know how to put a link on here but they seem to go for 24pounds two socket with rcd?? are they any good??? ITEM NO 7104919299 UNDER CAMPING
------------- Lifes all the better when you get old!!!!!!!
Better than one without an RCD, but not as good as the unit srnet linked to above. (however it is less than half the price, so no real surprise there)
Why?
No moisture protection and arguably it has SP fuse and not DP MCB overcurrent protection. It also appears not to feature any form of reversed polarity indication (another arguable point though I suppose).
If that's what you get though, it's not a bad price (that's a Seton RCD spur unit, which is around that price (retail) on it's own), and is better than some of the EHUs I've seen on ebay - but keep it dry!!!
thanks for the link number, i found it straight away.
i will pass on that one, its a home made job!
i think i may pass on getting a hook up due to price, even the second hand one of keef's(above) is not cheep. i will brave the cold spells with out heating!!
