I bought a set of LED lit dragon fly lights that operate on aa batteries. Have also seen lots of solar power strings of garden lights/fairy lights in the shops at the moment, Sainsbury's had a deal on them in our area...
+1 on ufo lights, +2 on glowsticks, they are completely safe for children, just don't buy really cheap naff glowsticks that could split when bent like one other user may have done. We was in the same situation as you regarding the night light for kids, the glowsticks were the perfect answer! Don't like the thought of small children with alkaline battery's to chew!
It depends on what you want really - we use a poundshop ufo light to give the entire tent a glow once the kids have gone to bed so for our kids they would be too bright in their bedrooms. We use these at home and in the tent - you just push the top of the mushroom to turn it on or off, battery operated so perfectly safe to be by the side of this kids beds and surprisingly good battery life too. You can get them in a variety of colurs
I found the best UFO lights in 'The Range' shop - small black ones made by Rolson - £3 each and much brighter and better than other cheaper ones - batteries AAA last a long time too. We use these in the tent (and they have hooks on them) for decent cheap lighting. I defo agree with the glowstix idea for the kids though - and they will soon get used to the dark with those as well - the best place for those is poundland - tube of 30 for ......£1!!
Good luck and i'm sure the kids will be better than you think
Thanks everyone for the replies. I really appreciate the advice. Think i will defimately get some glow sticks ( and hang them up out of reach perhaps!!). Just got all the other extras to sort out now - Gulp!!!!
