I've got the Wilko type one.Its ok, no mains lead though which would be a bonus. Can't say I find it really chills things a lot in summer. I don't use it much though as it is big and takes up too much room in an already full car.

I have the Camping gaz one and it's really noisy - so I think you should avoid that one. It really peeves me off especially in the wee hours of the morning when I'm trying to sleep!
I wish I could justify replacing it but it works fine - but if I could I wouldn't go electric at all (even if I'm using EHU for lighting and heating)
I'd like an igloo maxcool instead, which by all accounts works better than an electric coolbox which doesn't do a great job of keeping things 'really' cold. The maxcool can keep ice frozen for 5 days apparently! (or am I being seduced by the blurb!!)

I think they are aimed at different markets though Victoria.
We have an electric coolbox that we use for day-to-day items like milk, butter, bacon. I'm thinking of getting a maxcool for the longerterm items.
If you keep opening a maxcool then they wont keep things colder for much longer than a normal coolbox

Yeah I agree with that but it wouldn't be as noisy! I'm not concerned with keeping food frozen but I do want to stop the milk from curdling. I'm going to leave my electric coolbox at home next camping trip and take my pretty old but serviceable ordinary coolbox and a load of icepacks, a frozen curry and some frozen bottles of water instead!

Oh, that surprises me that yours is noisy? Maybe the fan is loose or something? They must wear out eventually, expecting ours too eventually as its on for like 8 days solid at a time! Ours is quiet, never had a problem with it. No different to hearing the fridge and freezer hum at home, so never thought about it.
Whats the cooler you were on about, is it an Igloo one?

I take back what I said earlier...my mini fridge has just arrived. Switched it on to test before giving feedback. It's a bit noisy . Might not be too bad in a tent though but I might have to switch it off at night.
Does anyone know how long it should take to get cold (approximately of course)?

gbm601 - this is the one I would very quickly replace my noisy one with, but as Bob61 says I often turned it off at night the problem was remembering to turn it back on in the morning!

I've got a Waeco T32 (bought for less than £50 if I remember correctly) and it's great. Comes with leads to run off both 240v and 12v electrics so it goes between the car and the EHU with ease. I think it's pretty quiet too as I had it running in the back porch of my small 3 man last year and slept with my head pretty much next to it. It makes a fairly gentle hum which I find quite soothing!
Only problem I've found is condensation dripping down into your food when it's warm and humid as the heat exchanger is in the lid. You just have to make sure you pack the food away sensibly (which my GF never does unfortunately!). I swear if I get given another soggy sausage roll or sandwich!!.... lol
