We are hoping to take our 6 mth old baby camping this summer. I was wondering anyone can recommend any equipment that might be useful for camping with such a young one. Also how would you recommend sleeping as i know airbeds aren't supposed to be safe.

Really excited about getting him in his first tent!

Thanks hxx

My son was a bit older than yours when we first went camping but we used a Graco travel cot & insulated it as you would an airbed i.e picnic blanket underneath it but we also shoved all our empty holdalls underneath to help, we put a towelling fitted sheet over the mattress.  I'd advise a gro bag or such like with a towelling vest, fleecy all in one suit and if he doesn't mind a pair of mitts as their hands can get very cold.

My son was 6 months old when we first took him camping in a tent. We did 2 weeks at Newquay.
We took the carrycot top of the pram and lined with towels for warmth and used lots of blankets. We didn't really get anything special for him but did swap half way through for an electric pitch so I could boil the water to sterilize everything.

The best advice I could give that worked for us was to keep the routine as much as you have at home as possible. It doesn't disturb them too much and you'll be suprised how much he loved it. He slept much better in the tent than at home!!

When our DD was 10 weeks old I got a new frame tent???    had to didn't I???

no problems with little madam slept better in tent than at home, just made sure she was warm and out of draughts, we sat up and watched her for first night. She blossomed in the attention around the site from other campers and we then relaxed and enjoyed our time away from visitors.  Mind you the old-fashioned midwife/nurse was horrified. HA HA

Just remembered photo, will try to up load it soon.

We didn't really have anything special equipment wise. she slpet in a Grobag type baby sleeping bag as at home (though with an extra fleecy suit and we had blankets if necessary.

She moslty slept next to mum as was breast fed. This was on an airbed (can't see safety problem with them) or on her own karrimat.Though we now all use self inflating mats which are probably better as they haven't got far to go if they roll off :-)

Remeber something for shade though.

We took our little boy to the New Forrest and the Isle of Wight for 2 weeks last summer and he was just 6 months old.  I put up an airbed and then put his travel cot on top.  He has one of the Necessity pop up cots which are fantastic as they double as a play pen and a beach shelter.  We made sure he had a good winter weight gro bag on and long sleeved pjs.  But we do have electric hook up and gave the bedrooms in our tent a good blast of heat before he went to bed as we have a small fan heater.  I would recommend one of these as you can put it on in the night if it gets really cold.  He loved it and slept really well.  Looking forward to camping this summer but it might be the other way around this year how to keep cool as we are camping in Italy.

Though since ours slept perfectly happily just on the air bed or mat, I'd question the value of anything baby specific

Would definitely recommend a high chair and this is the one we bought >> http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00069725 from ikea for about £10. Legs come out so it packs down reasonably well. Can also get a top for about £5

You can also get a nifty samsonitelike this although it is only for tiny babies. The advantage is it packs up tiny and doesn't take a lot of room. The alternative travel cot is what we used later on >> http://www.amazon.co.uk/SAMSONITE-POP-BUBBLE-TRAVEL-COT/dp/B001GIFG9U

We started camping around this age with our daughter. Also used normal winter grobag with fleece suit too- fleece on when she went to bed then added grobag on top when we went to bed if cold enough to make sure she didnt get too hot. We later bought a Purflo grobag with sleeves but did not know about them to start with & this & a fleece suit may be overkill in the summer!

At this age we used an old fashioned travel cot like the Graco- great as its off the ground unlike tent/bubble style and makes a good travel pen when you are putting the tent up and they dont grow out of them like the tent/bubble style cots. We later bought a Phil n teds travel cot as we got short of packing space due to extra camping kit. It is great as is a proper cot style so they can stand up in it when bigger (some get freaked out by tent style once mobile), it can be a toddler bed as has side access and has a sun shade too, though it is on the ground. http://www.preciouslittleone.com/product-information/54/6802/phil-and-teds-traveller-travel-cot---black/ we have red one and its been all over as it packs so small- only issue is nothing to tuck sheets into so we improvised with that as we were insulating with stuff underneath. We also cut up the fleece mattress covers from Dunelm to put over her mattress, beneath the sheet to keep cold out.

Also found buggy very useful- we kept it up in the tent for an emergency walk about after early morning waking or extreme yelling! We used a buggy shade over buggy for daytime naps to make it dark or for putting to bed in evening when still light & keeping her outside tent in our sight on an evening http://www.practicalpushchairs.co.uk/accessories/protect-a-bub-sunshades/183/protect_a_bub_deluxe_sunshade_single.html/ goes on any buggy and we used it loads for holidays, out shopping, out having lunch for peaceful naps.

Waterproof suit for sitting on the grass to keep dry & clothes clean, especially good for when they start crawling & we used it for lots of other occassions too. The ones in go outdoors lasted about 2 years & v cheap. Think thats all for now!

oh high chair- Lima . Not cheap but fab. Everyone who uses ours wants one. Great for camping as it stands alone, but is also a booster seat for seating extra kids visiting at home or visiting friends, going out for meals etc. Think they need to be able to sit up for it though.....or if you use a cloth sling, again a fab thing for a 101 uses and you can make an impromptu high chair out of it if you have any stable chairs to strap them too.

A lot of this kit adds up so we purchased it over time, normally having tried cheaper options and getting fed up, and it has been worth it as it has all been used a lot outside of camping as we visit friends & family quite a lot and have extra kids visiting us

Remember to take some toys!!!

We first took DD when she was 6 mths old and we used a normal travel cot for her to sleep in with a grobag and blankets. I took the gel type room thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature.  You may need take a dark blanket to throw over the travel cot for when you first put them down because it can be really light at 6.30pm!

she had only just started weaning on the first trip, so we took her bouncy chair which meant we could feed her and it additionally helped when we just needed to 'plonk' her somewhere.

the second trip was when she was 7.5mths and we took the antilop highchair from ikea - fabulous piece of kit.

I think, just remember you need layers to keep them warm at night, shade to keep them cool during the day (if you ehu then a fan is good) or you can buy those cooling sprays which you spray in the air. Think of what and how you are going to feed them and the equipment you might need.

Also, think about how you are going to bath them. the two sites we've been to had a family room with either a baby bath or a large sink, but we also take our food in a plastic lidded box, which we could use as a bath if needs be. We can also use it as a 'paddling pool' or water play time.

remember your buggy for early morning walks or when they just won't settle.

I love remembering camping last year and the early mornings. DD would wake up at about 6.30am and I would feed her in bed (I BF), then DH or I would take her for a walk in the buggy. then back to the tent, and I would sit in my chair watching the campsite come alive whilst giving DD her morning milk - bliss! Although people would walk by and say morning or wave or whatever than have that really bemused look of 'is that woman BF her baby?'

Also, your baby wakes in the night still for milk, then you'll need a blanket or a fan heater (we've got one!) to keep you warm as you are sat their. It's bliming freezing at 2am even in the middle of summer!

You'll love it and the baby will love it!

One thing that may sound silly and obvious ,is, do you leave the bedroom windows open at night and turn the heating off ?.

Some people with little ones keep the heating on at night , and windows closed even in summer.

It can then come as nasty shock to baby (and adults )when they go camping and find it 's colder at night in the tent than it is at home .

I have a friend who kept the central heating on all year round because her little one kicks the covers off and she doesnt want him getting cold
She doesnt seem to understand that he's kicking them off cos he's too warm .
not everyone is so thick !!
what i'm getting at is, if the baby is used to his room at home being cool beforehand , it wont be so bad when you camp.
