It's not essential but a foot print groundsheet is useful under a SIG as it keeps it clean (they tend to get a bit grubby underneath, and gives a bit of extra protection against damage (though pitched with sensible car it should be ok anyway.

SIGs are more awkward to clean than a loose ground sheet as can't just be washed and hung up.

However, for or two most recent tents I've just used some heavy duty polythene sheet (like that used for damp proofing under concrete floors) cut to size

welcome to ukcs bently

Using a footprint will keep the tent clean, but it also helps with the layout of your pitch cause you peg the footprint down where you want it then erect the tent on it, really helps if you have a funny shape unit rather than a square or if you start pegging out your tent and by the time you had finished the other end is in the hedge.

As already mentioned a footprint is great for keeping the SIG clean and protected and for deciding which way to pitch your tent.

You don't need to buy the manufacturer's footprint - just buy a cheap tarp from a DIY store and then cut it 1"-2" smaller than your tent all the way round (this prevents water from pooling between the footprint and SIG)

Hi Michael. I find it very useful to have a footprint for my Vango Diablo 900. It's a big tent with a SIG. Firstly it allows you to see exactly where the tent will be on the pitch. Then it gives you a working area if the ground is muddy when you pitch or take down your tent. When you see the mud collected underneath and think of that transferred to the canvas of your tent when you try to roll it up to put it away you'll be quite happy. Then just shove the footprint in a bin bag and hose it off when you get home. As Scrumble says, it doesn't have to be an expensive one.

Pete
