Can anyone recommend the best way to "spring clean" or refurb the steel poles on our Vermont L?

We have had this tent for just under two years.  It has seen a fair amount of use in the rain!

The last time we used them, in October last year,I had trouble getting some of the roof poles apart - the sections were almost stuck together.  I've also noticed what could be some rust spots on some of the pole sections where they join together.

We're about to go away for a week next weeekend so we'll be using the tent for the first time this year.  What is the group's opinion on the best general maintenance for these steel poles?  Is there anything specific I should be doing to them to keep them in the best shape possible and perhaps avoid some of the sticking problems we had at the end of last year?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Marcus

My Vango pole advice states vaseline over winter, but clean off before use...

Any help?

Clean off any rust spots with a bit of steel wool ,rust will make it difficult to get them apart , then next time you pitch it when you get home (give it 24hrs) get the poles out and wipe them and the inside of the bag down to get rid of any water/condensation on them before storing. If your storing them in a shed say over winter spray them lightly with WD40/Vaseline , but make sure you wipe it off before you pitch it for the first time, so you don't get it on the tent.

on my steel poles if i have any rust spots start appearing then i will rub them with wire wool and spray the poles with a silicone spray to stop them sticking together

fabsil waterproof spray is a silicone based waterproof spray so if you use that you wouldnt need to wipe it off as it made for use on tents

Yeah fabsil worked a treat on our Vermont XL. We sprayed it on all the male areas of the poles as we erected the tent last easter.

We havent had a problem with the poles sticking since.

I just bought an Outwell Montana 6, and upon openeing the Steel pole bag, found all the poles to have rust inside the poles.

I was horrified that there was already rust on something ive just bought!

After some research i found that phosphoric acid solution (available from Machine mart for a fiver) will eat the rust back to metal, then perhaps spray down the inside of tube with cold galvanising (Zinc) spray. After that a spray with WD40 or similar inside the pole to protect from oxygen reaching the metal.

I am loathe to do any of this to a product which is meant to be already galvanised by the manufacturer Outwell. But since i cannot find any contact details from them anywhere my only choices are to attempt the above, or return the tent for a refund.

Wd40 will evaporate and leave a protective coating on the poles it will not stain the tent no need for any other waterproof coating on the poles.
