My brother in law suffers from a bad back and gets on better with a self inflating mat, which are in Lidl from this thursday if you want to give them a go for £12.99.

I totally understand where you are coming from as we have just taken a Campinggaz one back, it was awful I have just ordered an Aerobed Active Double, but not tried it yet so cannot comment. Reading into it, the Aerobeds are about as close as you are going to get to a real bed, though they are costly. A good nights sleep is important, so a good bed is worth the investment imo, which is why I have splashed out £63.

Can i but into this thread ? Hope you don't mind breadknife? I sympathise totally with your hubby my back has stopped us from going away since last year.
I have a displaced disc in my lower back and can't sleep on our 'regular' airbed anymore. I tried out my dad in law's ex army camp bed to see if that was any better - i lasted about an hour before I seized up. Before i splash out on an expensive bed (we only go camping a few weekends a year) what does anyone recommend?
thanks
Helen

I would suggest visiting a camping store with self inflating mats on display. If you are lucky, they should have a bed of stones for you to lay the mat on then you can try it out (no snoring though ok lol).
If you do go for a SI then imho cheap is not good. We have tried a few and or us, none of them are comfortable but that doesnt mean they wont be right for you. The cheaper ones were definately alot worse than the expensive ones.
DS (15) could sleep hanging from the washing line but he hated the cheaper self inflators but now is as happy as a pig in muck on his €120 jobby.
As with most things, you get what you pay for.
It might help if you put a SI mat on top of a camping bed too so it is easier to get in and out of bed.

I would say you want something of equivalent hardness to your bed at home so you,ll need to do some comparing.
I have sciatica and sleep on a very hard bed at home so sleeping directly on a flat piece of ground without bumps is best for me! I have various Thermorests tho' because the ground is cold and never flat. They work very well for me.
Take care.

Picking up an aerobed active from Argos later today - £55 as on offer!
I have heard lots of positive comments on this.
I have ddd and as a result have had the lowest disk fused with a cage put in place. Hard mattresses are no good for me at all - I need something that supports my body shape - still sleep with my maternity sausgae pillow!

Did my back in really badly a couple of years ago, and was worried about camping for a minute as I couldn't even get in and out of my good bed at home (or sit down, or get up when I finally managed to sit down). Totally shifted my lower back out of kilter and screwed up the muscles as well - all through twisting in an awkward way to pick up a tool box.
Any road up, all the doc wanted to do was prescribe anti-inflammataries and pain killers, so I took myself off to a chiropractor who worked a miracle on my back in very short time. Went for regular visits over a few months, and it's been perfect since. And sleeping on self-inflating mats is absolutely spot on. I found air beds extremely uncomfortable, and like them even less now. But the SI mats are so comfortable.
Few things the chiropractor recommended to me when sleeping.....these are....only use one pillow, make sure the pillow isn't under shoulders at all, sleep on side or back, with head and back aligned. Never sleep on front. Don't even think about it now, and it's made such a huge difference. Never a single ache. And I don't snore any more either.
Definitely worth seeing a chiropractor, whatever anyone says.

Yup, friend of ours suffers from a very bad back quite often.
After much trying he prefer the thinnest of the Thermearest Self Inflating mats.
My wife who has a cronky hip, and is particualr about what she sleeps on finds a nice thck self inflating mat does her.
