afraid your asking alot here as it depends on what you want to do with them?as they both have good and bad point.size, sercurity, waterproofness(if such a word)storage when not in use and so on and so on.
i would also like to know what you can fit in a roof box...
am looking at getting a 320 ltr....will it be worth bothering with(cost versus space saving) or just carry on with the car exploding from the stuff i keep buying due to being on here??..
also toying with getting a trailer...aghhh i just can't decide...
well if you are going to get a roof box go BIG as they are all about the same across and just get longer.has to be said i started with roofbox went to trailer then tt now roof box on car and roof box on ttit's amazzing how much you take and as you say this sites not helping.
Got both, and I prefer my cheap Halfords box to the posh Thule bag. Either is great for bedding and other squishy stuff, but those last bits that you almost forget go easier into a roof box, unzipping the bag is a pain. Also, the bag has to come off,you can't drive with it empty. It doesn't matter how big it is,you will fill it! Don't go for a posh expensive box either, they spend most of the year stuck in the garage.

I made my own roof bag out of waterproof nylon with a zipper at the back end. Use it to stuff duvets and pillows into, and when we just had two surfboards it was very good 'splinted' with the windbreak.
Trouble was, I forgot that sewing would cause holes at the leading edge, which would let water in, and our first night was spent drying out the bedding!
Now we use it wrapped in plastic and well-anchored with elastic and hooks to the roof rack. It's not very smart, nor brilliantly aerodynamic, but it's cheap - cost about a tenner to make, and it does the job.
cheers folks.... i'm thinking box sounds the best, me the husband, 3 kids, 3 dogs, a ten man tent and all the rest doesnt fit in a bmw saloon! and i couldnt cope wi wet stuff.
Our roof bag has never leaked! Its made out of a tough sort of rubberised stuff and its excellent. Rolls up out of the way when not in use so ideal if you don't have anywhere to store a roof box at home.

We have the Thule roofbag and I have to say we are looking at getting a roof box as although the bag rolls up for easy storage, even when away, we always feel only light stuff such as bedding etc can go in the roof bag. The biggest you can get I would say with a roof box.
