Hi Warrenpfo. What on earth do you want dry ice for? Yopu would need a really good insulated container to keep it for a week. I have used dry ice in the past for stage effects and can tell you that it's very nasty stuff. You'll need really professional quality insulated gloves and tongs to lift it out. Remember, it sublimes (turns directly from a solid to a gas at minus 78.6 degrees celcius. And, of course, as it turns into a gas you'll add to your carbon dioxide footprint. Please think very carefully before taking it with you on a camping trip.
However, there are companies which do supply it, and at least one is nationwide. Just google Dry Ice
Hi Tony. It is used industrially for fast freezing food for long-term storage. It is good for this use because it doesn't turn into a liquid, but goes straight to a gas, carbon dioxide. It is also used in the entertainment industry for producing huge quantities of mist. You break it up with a lump hammer, put it in a basket and lower it into hot - or at least - warm water in a special machine. You get loads of violent bubbles and huge quantities of mist. You can also use much smaller quantities in hot water in a polystyrene cup (say) to produce the effect of smoke coming from something like a TV set.
Thank you for all the concerns. Coming from South Africa where we use dry ice all the time for camping all one needs is to wrap it in enough news paper and you can handle it with your bare hands or if you want to be cautious a pair of oven mits. If you then put it in a Polystyrene cool box and use it to keep your cool packs cold and any thing you want frozen it works a treat.
I know not to have it in a confined space and that it does produce harmfull gasses but apart from that so long as you dont try lick it or touch it with your bare skin you should be ok.
I read somewhere that if you press dry ice against any small "dinks" in your car it'll shrink them out without damaging the paintwork. Anyone got any views on this? (Sorry for hijacking your thread).
With so many options to choose from on keeping your food cold, 12 volt cool box, 3 way fridges, most campsites let you freeze your icepacks in their freezers I dont understand why you would want to use Dry Ice with all its dangers especially if you have kids?
Not sure a campsite would let you on if they knew either ?
Dry Ice is very good fun and is not actually very dangerous if you know what you are doing and apply a bit of simple common sense BUT I would not want it anywhere near a tent, either mine or anyone else's - the simple fact that it will displace oxygen would put me off, dry ice anywhere near an area where you sleep is not good.
so i've heard " cough cough " you can have a right laugh with it ,plastic bottle and lid with some warm water. quite a loud bang....you tube dry ice to see some footage....
