We have one of these already (fold down) Our neighbour says they aren't really worthwhile as too easy to go through with a cutter? Is this right? We were thinking of changing it to a removable one o an eyelet attaching point?
they could well be easy to cut through, but it will be very noisy and highly visible to everyone.
I have always looked as these things as a device to slow down the time it takes to steal something. If the thief is determined he will still take what you have. But with your post it make take 10 minutes instead of 2.
let's be honest if they want it they will have it but the more you do to make it hard for them the more likely they move on to something easier.hitch lock wheel clamp and leave the post you already have not a waste of time.sure you can cut with an angle grinder but with multi sercurity will they bother?
As above, no matter what you do if they thieves decide that they are having it, they will. Put as much as you can out to slow them down a bit, or hopefully put them off in search of easier pickings. Conversely, put on the bare minimum in security, as designated by your insurers, (check this very carefully) because if they make a mess of your van trying to steal it with lots of security you will have to sort and may have to pay to repair the damage yourself, including the expensive damaged security devices. With minimum security, it is more likely you will never see it again.
it now takes me at least 15 minutes to release our van to leave for the holiday.we have two wheel clamps, two heavy chains going through the back legs onto the wall to a ground anchor fixed there.hitch lock.a ground anchor at the front with a heavy chain going over the chassis at the front.all locks are as good as you can buy.IDM alarm with tilt sensor.all this is designed to slow them down so as to get caught in the act of taking the caravan.also CCTV just added to the house.hopefully they will see all the locks and move on.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I work in the access control/security industry and would agree with the points already made..... Any security is better than none.
You only need to be more secure than next door, if you want to deter the casual thief, make your stuff more difficult to get than the next target. If a 'proffessional' or determined thief wants your stuff. Chances are they are going to get it unless you spend a small fortune on equipment.
My insurance insisted that I add a security post along with my hitchlock and wheel receiver clamp or they wouldn't insure me so I bought one and concreted it in. It wasn't too expensive and may just deter the casual tea-leaf.
Take a look at the sold secure devices and get shrouded padlocks too.Almax do superb chains take a look on youtube at their controversial videos cutting virtually every competitors chains.
Its all about layers of security, think of it like baking a cake, its not just one ingredient that makes it taste nice.
A good ground anchor, parking post, tow ball lock and wheel clamp and tracker should be the minimum to protect a caravan imho.
Use sold secure products but in a way that makes them hard to get at.By this i mean put the anchor ring underneath the trailer, caravan etc so if anyone wants to attack it they wont be able to easily.Get a local welder to make up a protective box for the padlocks so it cannot be attacked directly with an angle grinder.
Alarm padlocks are a great low cost extra deterrent,ok the padlock itself is pants but its sensors are great for its unexpected loud siren.
I use these padlocks for lots of uses apart from what they were mainly intended for. When we go away i always add one to the bike lock chains when in services etc.
Anyone tampers with the bike rack and everyone knows about it !!
I too do security for a living and specialise in physical security which is probably why i may see it from an over the top point of view
If a thief wants your van he will get it no matter how much security you have, locks are only a deterrent, Our van is fitted with wheel-clamps, ground anchors, alarmhitch lock and drive post, we also have atracker, but hope we will never need to use it!!
As others have said if they really want it they will have it and this goes for not just caravans. However the more we can do to slow them down or deter the more chance of the thief moving on to a caravan that may not have much security.
The other option to consider is should the thief be ablet o get hold of the carvan fit a tracker device so that there is some chance of recovering it.
