HI hope someone can help were about to go on our first camping trip and trying to save money I have bought a second hand 3 burner stove. It looks in great condition and comes with hose and regulator but I don't know what gas it uses.
On the box it says propane/butane the hose is dated 1997 which from what i've looked at needs replacing but the regulator is navy blue with 28/30 on and made in Italy if anyone could help it would be appreciated.
Hi Lucy. If I were you I would just buy a new regulator to fit the gas bottle you choose. They are only about a fiver each. Definitely get new hose and a pair of clips to hole it on.
You can use whichever gas you want to, propane or butane ,as long as you use the correct regulator for the bottle. ie propane in a red cylinder, butane is blue.
Calor gas is cheaper than campingaz , so try to get a calorgas cylinder , from the tip/scrapyard/ freecycle / ebay/ car boot sale. Then buy a new hose and regulator to fit the bottle . hose is only a few pounds , regulator prices vary .
You can exchange a large empty calor gas bottle for a smaller one too, so if you can only find a big one cheaply, dont worry, just exchange it for a full one of the size you want. most use a 4.5kg for camping.
Check out the calor gas website for regulator guides.
If the regulator you have doesn't look in A1 condition I would replace that as well for peace of mind.
Butane is fine if you are only planning to camp spring to autumn . propane is better if you plan to camp all through winter as well as it doesnt freeze in low temperatures.
The regulators for different size cylinders are different fittings, some are clip on , some are screw on .
they also vary between campingaz, and calor, or other brands of gas too.
Take the regulator with you when you go to buy your replacement hose - they should be able to tell you which cylinder (if any) it will fit, of those available in the UK.
