ok - so having just got back from a very chilly weekend camping I'm looking for ways to keep warm.

1st night we were in a double (2 singles zipped together) sleeping bag - with a fleece blanket over me.  DH was warm enough - I was frozen.

2nd night i changed bags back to 2 singles - neatly lined mine with a fleece blanket, and was still cold, and had a slight panic attack after a couple of hours couped up in a single bag (had forgotten how much this freaks me out )  then wrapped myself in fleece blanket and opened up my sleeping bag and draped it over me - and was surprisingly warmer than i was before (although still not as warm as i'd like)

My dilemma is this - sensible option would be to buy a 3 season double bag - BUT my warm blooded DH would then be too hot - won't buy a single bag for reasons above.  So - should I:

a - buy one single 3 season bag and zip it to one of our current 2 season bags to make a double (would this work?)

b - take duvet from home & make myself a fleece liner type thing to sleep in so that i don't wriggle out of it in the night.  Could put one opened up single bag under fitted thermal fleece sheet on airbed to keep chill out from underneath.

I was wearing thermals, pjs and a fleece jumper - base layers not an option as I'm a "larger lady" and they don't come in my size

I'm leaning towards option B - any tips on making my fleece liner (am thinking a bought one would be more expensive and too claustrophobic)

sorry for rambling - I just want to get some sleep next weekend - and how my 3 year old slept through all my nighttime shannanigans I have no idea

You could buy a few metres of fleece, take the measurements from your original bag and add extra width. That would be easy to make and even add a toggle round the top to ensure it doesn't come over your shoulders? fleecey fabric can be around £6 per metre i'm a size 12 so would buy around 2 metres (just to see if thats cost effective).

My daughter and i were reading in bed whilst camping we had bags, duvets, fleece liners, pyjamas you name it we wore it, and hubby comes in the bedroom pod in just his undercrackers we both stared open mouthed and went whoooaaaaa you're hard lol so i know how you feel i just couldn't share with him.

Alternatively primark sell fleecey pj's and they are really baggy maybe that would be better so you won't feel closed in?

What was underneath you Wolla? Did you just have a fitted sheet over an airbed? If so, better insulation there could be more of a solution than insulating the top side. It doesn't matter how much you spend on a sleeping bag, the filling that is crushed under you is virtually useless, so the insulation you get from your sleeping mat/airbed is really important.

the fleece liners in primark are childrens ones . they do have fleece blankets for £1 though ,and sewing 2 together would be easy to make a liner .

when I use the sleeping bag opened out , or a duvet ,I used another one underneath instead of a sheet, you have to have good insulation under you as well. some people use the sheepskin type mattress covers , or the quilted mattress covers.
plastic backed picnic rugs on top of the airbed are also great for insulation.

Finally, have you got a hot water bottle and thick socks. if your feet are cold you'll never get warm .

Thanks everyone.

Had plastic backed picnic rugs on floor, then airbed, then sheepskin type mattress cover, then sleeping bag.

I'm thinking then that a homemade fleece liner is the way to go - i've got way too many fleece blankets lying around at home so could easily use that to make one.  on the 2nd night, i did feel with the blanket wrapped around and open sleeping bag over me - only prob was when blanket/sleeping bag fell off, so this should solve that.

will also pay a visit to primark to have a look at their fleecy pj's.

Debbie - yeah, I had lovely fleecy thermal socks on and feet were never cold (at home i always sleep with feet out of the duvet as i can't bear them getting too hot)

thanks again - looking at the forecast for the weekend I'm going to go to all this trouble and then end up too warm, but i'd rather be prepared - lol.

Hi I made a double fleece liner for our sleeping bag last year - well its completely simple to make if you have a sewing machine of course - just cut it to size just slightly narrower than the bag turn the fleece back to back and sew two sides and one end.  I also left a length on the underside which goes underneath the pillows which stops the liner slipping down the bag in the night.  I have actually never seen a double fleece liner to buy but as for making it being cheaper Im not sure - its definitely not cheap as chips though as I found that fleece material is pretty expensive.

I used the Aldi fleece blankets ad sewed them together across the bottom and about 12' up the sides.Keeps your feet warm and partner cannot pinch all the blankets.

Cheap fleece blankets sewn together work better if you put a button in the corner of the sleeping bag and a loop on the liner, that way you do not end up tied in the liner and it stays in place.

I love my fleecy liner, I use it through most of the year as I'm a very chilly sleeper.

One point though, if you and OH are different sleepers in that you're chilly and he's not, then a duvet solution is probably a better option that sleeping bags as if it's too hot for OH he can get a bit of air!   I find having a layer of duvet underneath me is much warmer as well (on a self inflating mat).

OH and I don't ever share sleeping bags though, he wouldn't in a million years sleep in the number of layers that I do and I couldn't sleep in the tiny amount of bedding that he uses.
