Could really do with some advice from you guys out there......
Which option is best for a 2 year olds air bed? Anyone got any experience? Initially we were thinking of one of those little beds that inflate with a blanket attached, but perhaps they are'nt warm enough etc, maybe more of a gimic?
Mine kept rolling off their airbeds, so if not in the TT we use the army canvas style beds. They are much more comfortable and contour to the body keeping them nice and snug.
When we started camping last year my son (then aged 6) used a ready bed that he already had, but with a slee
ping bag for anyting other than warm weather (the fleece on the ready bed isn't antwhere near sufficient for camping.
This year we've both upgraded to self inflating mats.
Just got our wee boy (23 months) a thomas the tank engine readybed, he loves it and it appears to have bumpers to stop him rolling out of it. We tried it out overnight on Saturday and put it on a folded blanket for more insulation from the ground and as it was cold he was in a fleece sleepsuit socks and another blanket over him.
Worked really well
now If we can find some way of getting him to sleep beyond 4am .........
when thomas was 2 we got a kampa junior airbed. the sides are raised so no chance of falling out - it was a definite hit and used it for sleepovers etc too. he didn't take to sleeping bag too well though so we just put warm fitted sheet on and took his duvet from home - slept like a log (better than at home!)
He's now got a tesco readybed rather than a more expensive 'character' one as it seemed like a deeper airbed and thicker sleeping bag. He was toastie warm in it at the weekend.
------------- Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways --- champagne in one hand and strawberries in the other --- screaming... WOOHOO, WHAT A RIDE!"
I 3rd (4th?) the Kampa airbed. The readybeds are ok, but more suitable for sleepovers indoors rather than in a tent. You could use a thicker sleeping bag or blankets with them, but the Kampa is cheaper and better quality imo.
Ours sleep on self inflating mats. Though kids don't seem fussy and have slept happily on closed cell foam mats as well. If they wriggle off they don't seem to notice, and anyway it's easy enough to shove them back on if need be.
We did have a ready bed for DD1, (but only cos we got it half price) it was ok, but a bit gimmicky really and the 'cover is really rather thin. Daughter managed cos she slept in pj's and a fleecy suit as well. We din't bother for DD2, she just went from a Grobag to a Vango midi bag on a SI mat.
The Kampa bed is fine, but we didn't want to buy another kiddy specific thing with a limited useful life. Can't say I ever feel we have missed it.
we used readybeds for several years in a tent, our little ones seemed to be OK, but we had an EHU with little fan heater.
A good trick was to put a camping mat between the airbed & sleeping bag (it should zip in) then we added a fleece blanket (doubled up) on top, on colder evenings.
The benefit of using self-inflating mats or roll-mats for kids is that they don't fall'off' them and during the day they double as a firm but cosy play space with no temptation to use them as a trampoline! (Or was that just my kids?!)
We used to use the ready beds but although they are great for sleepovers - for a weeks camping they just do not last, plus you need another cover with them and we too have EHU. Now ours just share normal double airbeds, we use two for the 3 of them - then they choose who shares which night!!
