Are the ice blocks better than a frozen water?

We tend to fill up a 2 litre water bottle and freeze that to put in the coolbox but wondered if Ice blocks are just just water in the or something different?

I se a mixture. the ive blocks lay on the bottom and I put bottles on the top. I do think the bottles last longer though.

Its all about the surface area to volume ratio. Ice block are usually thin so they will thaw quicker than any liquid you freez in a bigger 'block'. However think about how you are going to refreeze if you have to while you are away, most site freezers I have come across are pretty packed and smaller blocks might be easier to fit in than a couple of big bottles.

We have a huge cooler so I usually put a frozen 2 litre of water in each corner and cover the remaining floor of the box with thin blocks, we still have ice after 5-6 days in hot weather so it seems to work well. Keeping the box full also helps to hold the cold.

I use bottles of frozen water, they last longer than them silly little freezer blocks, the bigger the block of ice, the longer it will last, plus you can drink it when it's thawed too. We tend to freeze a 4 pint of milk too to use in the latter half of the week. Then it's onto ice from Tesco's if it's longer than a week!

I think frozen bottles of water (2 litre size, or 4 litres if you've got room) stay frozen longer than ice blocks.

It helps if you keep the cool box as full as possible, try to replenish it with items which are already cold themselves, top up with supermarket ice if needed. I also tuck a layer of bubble wrap across the top of the items in my coolbox for extra insulation, keep the coolbox outside the tent and, if I remember, put a cold soaking wet towel across the top of the coolbox.

I prefer bottles. Doesn't matter what's in them...milk, orange juice, squash etc. For refreezing obviously just water though! Then you can drink the nice cool just defrosted drink before refilling with water and freezing again. Appeals to my multifunctional space saving mind. Oh, and they last longer in the cool box too.

im with you there Val, anything that doubles up makes sense in camping terms

we decant orange and apple juice into screw top bottles, use larger ones with water and freeze the lot
a slushy fresh orange is great on a sunday morning with the bacon butty

along with the frozen casserole, and the wet t towel our cool box stays well and truly cold...not a freezer block in sight

It depends on

  • the latent heat required to turn solid into liquid - a gel will absorb more heat before it will turn liquid compared with water, therefore, it will keep the surrounding area cooler for longer.
  • the surface area of the item to be melted - the smaller the surface area, the quicker it can absorb heat.

Therefore, like for like in size, an ice pack will keep the surrounding cooler than water.

I believe the above is true based on what I can remember from my chemistry lessons many years ago!
