hi bernie i did this test with fridge empty at home
when we were using the fridge camping do not know what temp was but it was hot and it would not go below 13deg inside to keep food it should be below 5deg
A 3way fridge is a caravan fridge(ie an absorbsion fridge). 3 way fridges generally do only cool around 20Cdeg below ambient. ie ok in a UK summer of low 20sC, but in the south of France in temps of over 30Cdeg, not so good. Old 3way fridges often do not work very well, it can help to remove fridge & stand it upside down for an hour to remove any airlocks from coolant.
If you are on EHU your best bet is a compressor fridge, these stay cold whatever the outside temp. Either an expensive Waeco camping compressor fridge or a small cheap(£70)domestic compressor fridge will do the job.
hi tentz thanks i am keen to be able to use gas we go on sites somtimes with no ehu.will have to think about this more before jumping and buying something else.what i do not know is how hot it got inside the tent while out.
have to think about havng it out side when hot with some kind of shelter.
the.fridge i saw was a dometic and ad said. The cooling unit is much better on the RM4210, it will now work in temperatures up to 42 degrees you can see my thinking.if the gas part is improved as well it would cope with really hot days.no way of knowing if if it does with gas
Hi yrruf, Do you understand the difference between absorbsion fridges & compressor fridges?
3way fridges as found built into caravans or available as free standing boxes are of the absorbtion type, they have no motor. The advantage is that they can be run on gas as well as 12v battery(only while driving)& 240v mains & they are silent in operation. The disadvantage is that they only cool to about 20Cdeg below ambient.
Compressor fridges work better in hot weather but they cannot be run on gas. As I said a compressor fridge can be a cheap solution if you buy a small domestic one same as in your kitchen. Domestic compressor fridges are not really desiged to be moved about tho.
Compressor fridges designed for camping/outdoor use are much more expensive, they can be free standing boxes or they can be found installed in campervans/motorhomes but not normally caravans. They work on 12v/240v but not gas.
If you look here you will see the fridges you speak of that will work at ambient temps of 42Cdeg are the CoolMatics, they are compressor fridges, they cannot be run on gas. The RM fridges such as RM4210 are of the 3way absorbtion type. The website does not make clear the difference between the 2 types.
The fridges in the link are not the free standing type, they are desiged to be built into caravans/motorhomes, they cost well over £400 each.
If you want a free standing fridge for tent camping you have a choice of 3way fridge box which works on gas as well as EHU or a free standing compressor fridge that will work better in hot weather but only on EHU.
thank s tenz for info .the fridge i mentioned is 3way but from what you say not such a high performance on gas. they never mention this in tech spec or in shop when buying. thanks for time yurrf
We bought a table top fridge to take camping. Around £60 new and its a proper compressor fridge so works well in European Summer heat!
We no longer have the tent, but still take it with us with the caravan and keep it in the awning. Works far better than the caravan fridge does! And makes ice cubes for cooler drinks!
We had a problem with our 3-way fridge freezing the milk. You have two settings on gas, high to start it off, then you should turn it down to the lower setting, but hubby forgot to turn it down & we had to go to supermarket to buy milk before we could have our morning cuppa, because all the milk in the fridge had frozen solid.
Since then he always remembers to turn it down after a couple of hours on high. Couldn't fault ours at all, it really keeps milk & food fresh whether it's on gas or EHU.
Yes I have a Royal 3-Way Absorption Fridge and I have run it on gas, 12v and Mains. its superb it cools to 25c below ambient which is ample 30c outside 5c in the fridge (that is very cool). So 30c below ambient is MORE than enough. I normally run on gas and this makes ice cubes and keeps my drinks and food very cool. Even in the summer.
