What year is the tent? Does it have 3 bedrooms (2+2+4) or 2 bedrooms (4+4)

If you bought everything new, the 2010 Ontario 8 XC can be found for around £200, footprint groundsheet is around £20 (we haggeld and paid cash and got the footprint thrown in for free), stove with grill can be bought for around £35, good quality kitchen stands are about £40 and a decent porta loo can be bought for £35.
Total brand new would be around £330.

I always aim to pay between 1/3 to 1/2 of the origianl selling price when buying second hand (depending on condition) so I would try and get the price down to around £120-£150
However if you know the seller and you know all the kit has been well looked after then I would say £180 isn't unreasonable.

There were a couple of Ontario 8s on eBay recently and you can often find stoves and porta loos cheaply on places like eBay or Freecycle and check your local newspapers too.

If they have all been used once only its a great deal.

check that the tent has no sign of mould or mildew, as newbies often don't realise that the tent must be completely bone dry first before packing away. Even damp guylines can cause a dry tent to go mildew.

Go and see it put up in front of you and give it a good checking over.
Has it been put away wet? how long was it used for?.
Google the cooker/oven as they are expensive.Make sure you see it working too.

Sounds like a great starter kit if it's all in good condition. Ask about the gas bottle, hose and regulator for the cooker though because none of these are cheap either. Chairs, table, airbeds, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, camp pots and plates, tent light? What's your friend doing with all of these? I'd pay more to get these too. Worth asking and haggling a bit...up to about £300 maybe for absolutely everything you'd ever need. £300 doesn't go far in a camping shop nowadays.

I would say get it. If you find the tent is too much for you, sell that on ebay, buy something smaller, but keep all the equipment.

Yes, the car is bigger than the 'van.

Because it is a tunnel tent the Ontario 8 is very easy to put up.

OH can almost do it solo and the 2 of us (me being a short, unfit mum of 3) can have it up and all kitted out within the hour (and I always take A LOT of stuff!!)

Same here. Lovely tent to put up, easy to maintain and easy to pack down as well. Mines stood up to serious winds and rain when camping and came out fine.

Make sure that you see the tent up in all it's glory and if there is no visible damage buy it, Quality kit at an affordable price.
