Hi there. We have a Camping Gaz 907 bottle which is a full refill - we are using the correct camping gaz regulator and hose connected to a Hi-Gear twin cooker & grill and I was surprised that the cooking flame produced even when on full was very small - the heat generated was good and I don't doubt that it would be good enough to cook on but there didn't seem to be much variance between low or full on - is this normal? - I have had cookers in the past which have been like flame throwers or have I just answered my question - and the regulator slow the flow right down for safety...

Hi Richard

We had exactly the same problem with our Gelert twin burner (Gelert supply to Hi-gear). Like you, we had the correct regulator & gas bottle but the output was always so poor and constantly got blown out despite using various windbreaks etc. After perservering for 2 seasons we have given up on it and bought the Campingaz Chef - used it for 1st time this weekend and found it excellent with a much better pressure.

Your previous experiences of 'flame throwers' (accompanied by a roaring noise?) was probably on devices that operated at cylinder pressure. The correct regulator will be blue (for Butane) and set to 27 millibars (I think.)

The regulator reduces the pressure and regulates the flow to be even, irrespective of how full or empty the cylinder is.

As long as the flame boils your kettle in a reasonable time and does not too easily blow out, it should be fine.

If it boils a kettle in reasonable time, its ok. If not & stove is old, clean out burners. If regulator is old replace it, they don't last forever.

Hi guys thanks for the advice. The bottle, regulator and the stove are all brand new. I think the proof of the pudding will be in using it in the field. I suspect it may be the regulator as it really supresses the flow of gas - almost to a none existant hiss, like trying to blow your breath through a pin hole - the grill doesn't seem to have any restriction of flow - if I blow through the inlet pipe it blows through like a large apeture straw.

The flame produced is 'solid' looking and I would hope it won't blow out too easy. I suppose I was expecting more control between full-on and simmer. Richard

I used a GAZ stove with a GAZ regulator as you describe for many years, never burning any food. Then I lost the regulator, so had to buy a new one, wow, at least twice the flame I had been used to. So I can only assume some GAZ regulators may restrict a bit too much. If you could borrow one just to try, that may be the problem.
