What is best? A cooler box like the Coleman Extreme or a 12v/mains one? My concern is that if we have it connected to the car it will flatten the battery. I have changed my mind about what to buy so many times, I really need some advice.
Hi, if you're thinking of a 12v one you probably need to be running it from an EHU,I think the car is suitable when you're on the move but not on site.
------------- Are you sure you've read the instructions?
We've got both, although our passive cooler is the Kampa version of the Colemans and appears to work well.
We did try last year to run an electric cool box off a car battery and solar charger. The charger is now fixed to the garage roof to help top up the battery for the old car in there and probably won't be leaving home.
e hve a (expensive) Waeco Tropicool that switches on and off instead of being on all the time which we have managed to keep topped up by running occasionally whilst not in the moving car. I believe that you acn get an attachment to plug in to the cigarette lighter between the cars electrics and the coolbox that will detect if the cars power is falling too low and cut power to the cool box thus saving the cars battery.
The Waeco CF range have battery level detection built in, so won't flatten your battery, in fact you have 3 levels to choose from, one of them being zero, on that setting you could potentialy flatten your battery. although some modern cars also have this built in, cutting of the supply to the 12v outlet sockets should battery level fall low, I find my VW Golf most anoying as when the ignition is off, so is the 12v supply to the auxillary sockets of which there are two one near the gear stick and the other in the boot, what were VW thinking!.
I've been wondering the same thing as yourself, Sarahwestley, and have pretty much decided on getting a 3-way fridge to run off gas cannisters. Has anyone used these, and if so, are they worth the hefty price-tag?
Igloo Maxcold are excellent by all accounts. They are non powered, but claim to keep food cold for up to 5 days, and they use a different insulation to coleman which means the walls are not as thick so you have more room inside.
I defo wouldnt run a 12v box off a battery it will be flat in a matter of hours, 12v to 240v inverters are great if you`ve got hook up on site, they are around £20. Or some waeco ones have the 240 lead already built in.
