We are just starting out in camping and have bought an Outwell Oakland XL. We are trying to decide what airbed to go for. The two kids are sorted but my wife and I are trying to figure out if two single airbeds would be more comfortable/practical than a double. We are used to a queen size bed at home so don't want to feel to claustrophobic!!
Any thoughts on the above and recommendations on airbeds would be much appreciated!
We always use a double but never thought about trying 2 singles..!! The airbeds I have found to be best are the old blue & red ones with the built in pillow which seem to be increasingly difficult to get hold of...although I think argos sell them....not keen on the new plastic with a flock side type we have got through about 4 over the last 2 years they just puncture too easy...especially the Tesco ones I would strongly advise against them!
enjoy camping I reckon it is the most relaxing pass time in the world

We have got the coleman comfort and love it, its got twin chamber so one of you moves the other dosent, im sure i saw a post saying that amazon had them on offer for around £20.00.
I'm with shinealite. I think the blue and red ones are very good indeed and am surprised they don't get recommended more. I've never had one deflate on me or get a puncture. Argos does indeed sell them.
Having said that I have recently upgraded to an Aerobed Active. (Also available from Argos and other places.)
The downside of double airbeds is that one of you may want it inflated more firmly than the other. Also, if the person sharing the airbed with you moves or gets up/down then you can be bounced about. That's where twin chambered air beds have an advantage of which Aerobed Active has a version....but it's not cheap.

I used to love sleeping on the red & blue airbeds as a kid and did consider getting one to replace the kingsize flock topped, plastic airbed we already have. I found it really cold when we camped out a few weeks back.
Are the old faithful red & blue ones warm?
Also looked at self inflating mats but not sure to get a double or two singles. Do they have the rubbery whiff about them like airbeds do?
We used to use doubles, and still do for the kids as they don't weigh much! My wife & I find 2 singles better as if you need to get up in the night you only disturb your own airbed and not send the other into orbit
In our small tent though which has 2 sleeping pods, we do find 2 singles in 1 pod a bit tight when the double is in the other one. No probs in our big tent though so I guess iy depends on your tent sleeping arrangements.
Tashmina, all air beds are going to be cold because the air in them quickly cools down at night. For our early/late season camping I've got imitation wool/fleece fitted sheets (from Dunelm) and some flanelette-stlye fitted sheets made by Coleman (Go Outdoors had them). These provide a nice level of insulation from the bubble of cold air that you are lying on.
Typically hubby is always hot and bothered on the airbed...probably because we only cover it with a normal sheet. Going to get that fleecy thing in Dunelm on Friday and pinch some wincyette sheets from my nan. Plus a plastic backed picnic rug & mats on the floor should help with the cold...might even go all out and get a winceyette nightie...that should give a few people some looks in the mornings on the way to the shower!
We bought a Coleman Comfort because of the twin chambers and found it great. We hadn't used it for 3 years as we bought a folding camper and it was too big for the beds but we dug it out for our last holiday for my adult daughter to sleep on in the awning annexe. We also did the Picnic blanket below and Dunelm fleecy sheet on top and, judging by the amount of time she spent asleep, it must have worked well!
Hello Tim.
My wife and I did have a double, until recently.
Leakage and crosstalk were the main problem, so I returned it, and got 2 Coleman singles.
Just wish I'd done it in the first place. End of crosstalk, and eventually I'll persuade her we need our own bedding (I usually end up without the top layer). LOL
I do use an under bed thermal barrier of some sort, as well as using an Eco-Mat under the SIG.
Whatever you decide on, I wish you many hours of restful nights.
Kind regards James
------------- In the beginning there was darkness.
Then I bought a tent.
I'm not destitute, I'm just poor.
Once the aches and pains needed more that a thermorest we switched to airbeds, double to start with and now two singles, both prefer the singles as less movement when the other gets up and a bit more room, two singles are wider than a double, its also easier to get the right amount of air for individual preferences. We top them with a double duvet for insulation and use another over us, very snug.
