Hi I am off to Norfolk in a couple of weeks with Montanna 6 tent. Given how dry it is has been this year particularly in that part of the country, i am becoming increasingly concerned that i will not be able to peg out my tent.
I know there are numerous (too many) threads on this subject, but is someone able some advice on what pegs I should take with me. Currently i have some long plastic storm pegs (it was very windy last time I went) and the quite a number of the stainless steel tent pegs which tend to bend fairly easily once the ground gets a little hard.
Im no expert mate, but we went on our first trip last weekend, bought some of those 'rock pegs' i think there called. Like a long nail with plastic hook on end, no bother getting them in ground mate
Thanks for the quick reply, which ones did you end up buying. Incidentally I contacted the campsite and they said that some sort of screw peg is the best one to use. Anyone had experience of these?
I used the traditional wire pegs for years and swore by them but I was forever having to straighten them out. I changed to a heavier wire peg but even they bent on really tough ground. I then tried plastic pegs which came with my Outwell. Being fluted, they used to drag out sods of soil when extracted which was annoying and I eventually bent all the tips in hard ground rendering them useless.
I now use ribbed rock pegs and take a small lump hammer to knock them in with. So far I have had no problems with them in any type of ground.
got most of our rock pegs came from Towsure -they have a wide selection at good prices
we have a variety now accumulated over the years, unless you bought a French or Dutch tent the wire freebies are probably not up to much
Some thick rock pegs with plastic heads are good in a lot of conditions - including hard standing but the plastic heads eventually break. The thinner T style pegs (no plastic) are ideal for inners and tent walls. I also have looked at longer 'Granite' pegs to supplement the rock pegs but we have so many pegs now it is hard to justify - maybe I am a peg fetishist ?
best way to get rock pegs in (and sometimes the only way to get them out) is with a decent claw hammer

.......I think I am too, Eldorado. I can't go into a camping shop without coming out with pegs. What makes it worse, it that I am a caravanner!!
I suppose I am peg minimalist...can't be doing with all sorts of different pegs for different things. I much prefer one general purpose peg and at the moment I find the rock pegs fit the bill

Anyone tried these? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pyramid-Metal-Thread-Screw-Pegs-20-Adaptor-Included-/260626012431?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item3cae85590f
Yes. Still have the metal screw pegs - and the plastic pyramid ones. It was a fad I went through and am now convinced that, generally speaking, I prefer the good old rock pegs and plastic red ones (or grey) driven in by a small lump hammer. Always keep them for the odd occasion though.
