No they don't smell - the fluid you put in the toilet breaks down the waste and prevents smells.
Not wanting to go into too much detail, but I suffer from IBS and have never found the tent to be smelly by using a porta loo.
You empty it at the chemical disposal point and there is usually a hose there too so you can give it a quick rinse out.

I wouldn't go camping without ours now - we have a Fiamma Bi Pot and also a Thetford Porta Potti.
Thetford are supposed to be the superior make but I personally prefer the Fiamma.

We've been using a 'luggable loo' http://www.outdoorworld.co.uk/luggable-loo-portable-toilet-p-3498.html for quite a few years now. They aren't small, but that makes them comfortable, extremely easy to clean, and never seems to smell much. Both adults and kids use it at night. After disinfecting, useful for storage on the way to and from the campsite.

We have the Highlander folding toilet, which folds flat and uses strong plastic bags. We've added a flexible chopping board with a tie as a lid, mainly as we use it as a bin during the day and the lid keeps wasps away. We just empty the bag into the Elsan point and then bin the bag. Doesn't smell enough to be a problem...
