hi all,
thinking about these to save the middle of the night trips to the toilet. just a thought about if one of the kids has a poop, do they smell or does the lid keep the stench out of the tent??? defo don't want a stinky tent for the rest of the night. Also do you empty at the same point as caravanners toilets??
No they don't smell - the fluid you put in the toilet breaks down the waste and prevents smells. Not wanting to go into too much detail, but I suffer from IBS and have never found the tent to be smelly by using a porta loo. You empty it at the chemical disposal point and there is usually a hose there too so you can give it a quick rinse out.
I wouldn't go camping without ours now - we have a Fiamma Bi Pot and also a Thetford Porta Potti. Thetford are supposed to be the superior make but I personally prefer the Fiamma.
Kampa Khazi types are akin to a stylish bucket but Thetford et al have proper flush etc
Never used the Kampa one so dont know how often you empty them etc. But our Thetford 345 is perfect for the kids (it is smaller than some Thetfords) and is very hygenic. It only needs emptying every few days
Thetford are a bit dearer but you can still get parts, even for the old ones - and there are budget equivalents to them these days
The Kampa Khazi are basically seated covered buckets. Thetford Pota Potti and other similar are 2 part used with chemicals. eBay usually have some in auction. Avoid CampingGaz as they gave reputation for leaking. Many use a simple bucket with lid and few drops of disinfectant. That is all we used when our daughter was a toddler. We put some water in with Zoflora or similar. Never had any problems.

I have a Kampa Khazi portable loo and we have only used it once for one night but it didnt smell and my daughter did a number 2 in it lol
we are taking some zoflora next time - only because we going for longer
We've been using a 'luggable loo' http://www.outdoorworld.co.uk/luggable-loo-portable-toilet-p-3498.html for quite a few years now. They aren't small, but that makes them comfortable, extremely easy to clean, and never seems to smell much. Both adults and kids use it at night. After disinfecting, useful for storage on the way to and from the campsite.
We have the Highlander folding toilet, which folds flat and uses strong plastic bags. We've added a flexible chopping board with a tie as a lid, mainly as we use it as a bin during the day and the lid keeps wasps away. We just empty the bag into the Elsan point and then bin the bag. Doesn't smell enough to be a problem...
