I am on the look out for a decent 4 season sleeping bag and have seen a number that claim to be up to the job as used by carp fishers. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of bag? weight is not an issue, but cold is!

I would advise looking at the reviews from the fishing communities.

Considering carp fishermen/women often sleep under an open shelter overnight so that they can get to their rods should there be any signs of a fish, their sleeping bags must be up to the job to keep them warm.

My 2p, based on my limited knowledge about fishing.

If it is very cold, many Carp Fishermen are wearing several layers of clothing including their jacket & padded salopettes with an open sleeping bag on top or below them as the bulk of clothing is too much for them to get in & out of it.

If you are cold, then perhaps the easier thing to do is:- dress with more layers - use a hot water bottle - use EHU & keep a heater on - sleep off the floor with a camp bed or even better, a Carp Fishing bed - insulate more below you than on top of you - keep additional layers handy to add during the small hours when it is at its coldest!

The insulation below you is the most important & effective part of keeping warm!

Ditto Green Pesto,

but I have also noticed that the fishing equipment bags, are much bigger/wider than most normal camping 4/5 season bags, and lots of us don't like the restricted feel of ther narrow winter style bags. I also use a Nash Frostbite Enhancer topper, and have found that is enough for most non winter camping with no sleeping bag. It is often stated that the bags have to be narrow to heat up efficiently, well, I have had no problems with the cold, when using a king size duvet folded in half in the winter.

Hi

http://www.greatuniversal.com/solace-sleeping-bag/639799432.prd?browseToken=%2fb%2f2780%2fq%2ffishing&trail=2780&prdToken=/p/prod2060073-sku5955299

I have bought this as I hate being cold and hate even more being restricted in bed I have been out in it in about 8 degrees and at that temp I would usually be freezing but was comfortable with just my socks trousers and tee shirt on.

I have to say on the sleeping stakes with this I have never had a cold night and that is a first for me and camping.

Of course you can buy it cheaper for cash.

I am a carp fisherman. I fish all year round. Have been through countless sleeping bags in my time. I would choose the warmth & space of a carp fishing bag over a camping sleeping bag every day. It does come with a price though. If you let me know your budget i can point you in right direction if it helps.
Bear in mind we also use bedchairs which keep us well off the floor, this also has a dramatic affect in keeping warm

I sleep in a Fox ZZZ all year round under a brolly, no problem.

I would suggest you avoid the flecce lined ones such as the Trakker Big Snooze as they tend to grab hold of you when you turn over.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. Size is definately a consideration when it comes to sleeping bags, I would rather sacrifice a little bit of thermal efficiency for the sake of freedom of movement. A 'carp' bag looks like it's going on the shopping list then.

Ive used a sundridge heat control for many year and never got cold.Contrary to belief i dont wear loads of extra clothes whilst in it either as i would get way too hot.

Carp bags arent the cheapest gear but they do what they say and keep you warm with lots of space.I think the mummy type is best for warmth is a bit of a myth tbh as my carp bag is huge and super warm.

Get what you pay for it seems.

i was taking an old fish tech bag camping with us and tbh it was a bit too warm, for summer camping. i now use a carp tech goliath 4 season bag. it is a 2 layer bag and i just use the outer layer when summer camping . when i go fishing through the winter i just pop in the inner bag. i have used it down to minus 4 and been toasty. bonus is it packs down to the size of a football.

Totally agree with Green Pesto, I am a carp angler,12months a year, If your in a tent ,use a heavy duty ground sheet!!! They make a BIG difference.I use a carpers 4 season bag , plus a thermal lined over blanket that is also showerproof ,so your protected against any condensation drips. Nothing worse than being cold and damp at night. No sleep ,,=No fun.
