I find that most Honda generators are reasonably quiet, i have a honda generator for my van and the sound doesn't intrude into the van or annoy near by campers, its not silent but it sure is quiet, and i service it regularly,
Also a family member of myne has another Honda generator with a gas conversion wich is even quieter and cheaper to run! And it cost much less than a grand
The other benefit of these 'silent' (ok, ok, whisper whisper quiet) generators is that the exhaust gases are dispersed of in a controlled manner (can't remember how, now) but that you can connect a flexible pipe to the 'exhaust' outlet and use the end of the pipe to heat a tent or campervan. The exhaust gases are perfectly safe to breathe in.
The downside to this generator set-up is that it draws fuel from an external supply (on the website and the unit demonstrated at the War and Peace show) it connects via a typical military jerry can connector onto a 20l jerry can. Not sure how a campsite would feel about this type of set-up!

NO exhaust gases from any generator are safe to breathe in - omg - what planet are you on???
the hot exhaust gases from the generator may go into a heat - exchanger device like they do on the old volkswagen beetle cars - the hot exhaust gas heats fresh air which is then blown into the car - or in your case into the tent or caravan, but the exhaust gas from the generator directly is absolutely NOT safe to breathe in at all!.
please be careful what you write - someone could read your post, not being aware of the poisonous nature of the exhaust gases + emissions from a device which burns fuel and end up getting badly hurt or worse!!!.
if you have the exhaust gases from a generator going into your tent / caravan and you go to sleep - it ll be the longest camping / caravan trip of your life.

I camped between 2 generators once, fume city and noisy just because people don't complain doesn't mean they like it
This, exactly.
There's a time and a place for generators...on a peaceful campsite is not one of them.
