There are a lot of pros and cons for having a caravan. I bought one once and it took me months to find one without damp in it or damaged panelling where damp had been, but as above, they are comfortable and convenient once on site.
My problems were that they do tend to eat money. I had to pay for storage for mine since I don't have a driveway. It wasn't a lot but ate up the site cost of at least one camping trip a month and I had to pay it whether I used the caravan or not. You really need to have insurance as well in case the caravan causes injury to a third party or gets damaged in some way or another.
Then there is the maintenance. You really have to have them properly serviced every year...gas and electrics checked, brakes, chassis, suspension, tyres etc; and that costs pretty much the same as servicing a car. Water ingress is always a worry even with a new caravan because damp kills caravans!
Depending on the luxuries the caravan contains there is some maintenance there as well...water tanks have to be drained in winter etc. You also need extra things that you may not use in a tent such as a gas and/or carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher, fire blanket etc.
And finally you have the responsibility and worry of towing it...making sure it is balanced/weighted properly, lights checked, tyres, etc; and although a large caravan is easier to reverse than a small trailer you need to be able to do it pretty well. I surprised myself by being fairly good at reversing but I worried all the time I was towing in case a wheel fell off, puncture in an awkward place etc; or even an accident which entails a heck of a lot more problems than just having an accident in a car.
So I flogged it and went back to a tent...very few hassles or worries and the occasional rainy day is just a short lived inconvenience. Mind you...I did get a bigger, easy to erect tent with a SIG and EHU and actually found there was more room in it than in the caravan, and if you buy modern equipment, comfy beds etc; it can be just as convenient and comfortable inside as a caravan...and you can still hear the dawn chorus ...and the caravan door slammers and bangers
