In France at the moment - have 10 amp supply - have two lanterns that are meant to charge to full power but don't! Can anybody suggest what I can buy to have a reliable lighting supply - would table lamps from the local supermarket work or should I be looking for something more specialist.

Most big french supermarkets have a camping section so you could look at battery lamps. Or for an outdoor rated building inspection lamp in the DIY section, or in a DIY warehouse such as Castorama? Think these are called "bricolage" or home improvement stores. Table lamps aren't really meant to be used outside a nice dry house.

Whatever you buy though remember you'll also need UK plugs to fit your UK EHU if using electric lamps, unfortunately, or an adaptor!

I am sure that you'd be able to get a couple of cheap UFO led lights (<£4) where you are - can't believe they only do them for the UK market. Hardware and general goods type stores. Survive for over a week on 3 AA batteries and not mains voltage dependent so no trailing leads.
