This Saturday will be our first experience under canvas. I've just bought some 8 inch nail type tent pegs (sorry if not the correct name) from Towsure. I only bought 10 and plan to use these in conjunction with the normal style pegs. My question for you all is would it be better to use the nail pegs to peg out the tent or to use for the guy ropes?
Rock pegs? Thick steel things that look like 8" nails, usually with a plastic bit on top?
If so they are designed for penetrating hard ground. It wouldn't do any harm to have a similar set of T-section plastic pegs if the ground is on the soft side, or use V-section metal pegs if you have them. Pin-pegs are less useful on guys except in ideal conditions.
I'd use the strongest pegs on the main guys, i.e. the ones attached to poles and seams, not so much on window flaps and so on.
That is a difficult question to answer without knowing what pegs were supplied with the tent, how many guy ropes there are, and why you felt the need to buy 10 more pegs of a different type.
My Carolina 3 came with 23 plastic pegs which I didn't like for various reasons but they did the job pegs are supposed to do. Then the tips of most of them were damaged on hard ground so I changed the lot for Rock Pegs (which may be what you mean by nail type pegs) and use them on the flysheet and the guy ropes.
Providing you have enough to go round I would suggest putting the rock pegs on the guy ropes. If you haven't got enough to go round then you will have to mix them anyway.
Hello Mark.
AS Richard and Bob have suggested, use the 10 'nails' for the load-bearing guys.
I have not used the plastic pegs that came with my Outwell. I already had some 'Ground Hogs' bought from Halfords, to replace the 'wires' supplied with my dome tent.
My 'Ground Hogs' are the same length and style as your 'nails. I ended up getting more packs, so 4 packs of eight do all my pegging points (groundsheet as well).
Last month I had to dig one out, as it was firmly embedded in the hard ground. Yes, I did the watering trick, but to no avail.
Kind regards James
------------- In the beginning there was darkness.
Then I bought a tent.
I'm not destitute, I'm just poor.
Thanks all for the replies. Sorry I haven't been very technical about my description but they came in singles at my local camping place (Towsure). Having only got the small wire ones in the tent set I thought it may be best to invest in some stronger more substantial ones.
I thought that it'd be best to use on the main guy ropes so am glad I've got something right. This will be my first time away as a family of four (2 adults, 1 at 6 and 1 at 18mths).
