We are inexperienced campers, and I want a fan heater in the tent. We are having Electric Hook up and have seen a 3KW heater in Argos. From reading other "Heater" threads I realise the 3kw might be a bit "big"- but if you run it on a lower setting will it be ok?

Sorry I'm so think LOL

I`m not a tentist, but 3kw will prove too much for many EHUs although not all. If you run it on a lower setting (say 2kw), you may still trip the supply as that is dependant on the ampage of the hook-up. 2kw is still over 8 amps, so there isn`t a definative answer.

Whilst a fan heater is good at getting a quick blast of heat, would you not be better with a small convector/oil filled heater which will be silent and can be left on all if the time if needs be, without waking you up if you use it overnight?

We've got quite a few 3kw fan heaters. We use them in the conservatory as although there is a radiator in there it loses a fair bit of heat as the pipes run under the kitchen floor and they're not insulated.

Ours have got three settings, a cool fan, 1.5kw and 3kw. If we go to a site with 16 amp electricity then we can get away with having it on the full 3kw setting but without having much else plugged in. We usually have it on the lower heat setting which is 1.5kw. It just means that the tent takes slightly longer to heat up.

I remember the first time we went camping and we plugged two 2kw heaters in without having a clue about the electricity. Every time one of the thermostats turned the heater off our unit tripped. Fortunately the actual post that supplied electricity to 3 other tents didn't trip because being completely clueless we just kept plugging the heaters back in. You live and learn!

You might find the trip on your hook up unit will still not like a 3kw heater, as sometimes they're only 10A.On the other hand you'll be fine with one of your existing ones at 1.5kw! If you were buying new I'd definitley suggest getting a small 1kw/2kw one instead.

we have a 3kw heater and never had any problems with it - in fact I have just recommended that same heater in Argos to some friends who are starting to camp.

we do keep an eye on what else is running when it is on but we can happily run a fridge and the heater at the same time - and we have been known to have the tv on too.

The heater is rarely on full tho - we find after the initial blast of hot air to warm the tent up, we only need it on a low to keep us topped up

We have had some good results in our awning with this.  We have never tripped out the electrics with it - very good heater.  Bought ours on offer from somewhere or the other at £19.95, but can't see them as cheap this now.

Now I'm getting worried...

We're off to Cornwall in September and although the weather has always been kind to us, this is the first time camping...no luxurious cottages this time (but more money left in my pocket!).

So, I have this heater that was left by the gas people when we had a gas leak and wondered if it would be too much power for using whilst camping?

I read the amp/watt conversion thingy but got terribly confused. This is our EHU which we've only used once and we ran the digital radio, cooler fan and iphone chargers off it with no probs.

Got this one from Argos about 3 weeks ago, great little heater for the price (£12.99) and only 2kW, it’s also got a switch on the bottom so if it’s accidently knocked over it cuts out .

The rule of thumb is only use one 'appliance' at a time. I recommended the 'value range' fan heater from Argos to a friend recently as it's very compact and easy to pack. Just don't have a whole load of things sucking down lecky and you'll be fine.

We need a sticky on the heater in a tent thread, whats safe, whats not, the dangers and safe guarding etc for electric and gas heaters, ehu capabilities of running heaters, alternative safe ways to stay warm while away outside.

I think this would be very helpful to new members and save the same thread from coming up every couple of days!

Would admin consider this to help other users in their quest to stay warm whilst away on holiday?

Only ever used our fan heater on the 1kw setting with the variable heat set at about 1/2 - this is more than enough to heat up our Ontario 8.

Personally I wouldn't ever use a gas heater in a tent - I'd be too worried about fumes - but I know some people do and are quite happy with them.
Just remember to make sure the tent is well ventilated and never leave it on over night or when the tent is not occupied.

I too bought this heater on the weekend for my camping trip from Wednesday onwards, will let you know how it goes.

My EHU will have the heater and coolbox pluged in over night (probably) Hopefully this won't trip anything out

well just to get me to sleep to knock off the chill, and again when I wake up during the night as always happens when I'm  camping.

I think it turns off when it gets too hot, and cuts back on when too cold, if not then I 'll just have to shivver!!!

Just got back from my few days stay at Leadstone Dawlish Warren, with the above Argos heater.

Well what can i say, it was brilliant, and we left it on all night. If you set the thermostat to 2 when the air temperature reaches this warmth it then turns itself off, until the ambient ari temp goes below then it turns itself back on, it is a bit noisey, but no more than the coolbox. As it rained all day on Friday it kept the damp chill that you get feeling away form the tent, so nothing felt damp or clamy at all.

All in all the OH said it was the best £13.00 spent for camping, to the point now he can't wait to go again.

Just thought I would let you know

Donna
