Had problems with pegs though. The pitch we had was very wet towards back and stoney hard at the front.
We pegged the 4 corners of the monty but when raising it these came out really easy. In the end used some 'u' shaped pegs an dit held but not very well.
The canopy was over the hard ground and broke a couple of the blue outwell pegs, ended up using some think wire pegs.
Would I have been better with some delta pegs on the corners and rock pegs at the front ?
Deltas are only for guylines, not flysheet pegging points.
I use big V-profile ripple pegs for corners...not the rubbish ones normally supplied with tents but some huge 12" ones from an old trailer tent. I use wire crook-topped pegs, 12" long and as thick as a pencil, for pegging down rings. Standard but good quality wire pegs for most other points. If the ground is hard I'll substitute rock pegs for all of the above. I tend to use my Deltas just on the canopy guylines.
I'll say again...pegs supplied with most tents tend to be a bit weedy. It's worth going to a good camping shop and buying a good selection of heavyweight ones, plus a set of rock pegs. The weedy pegs are fine for pegging down rubbers and inners though, if the ground is not too hard.
I am becoming a bit of a peg fetishist/collector but tend to use thick rock pegs for most situations, with big ripple Vs as back up in softer ground. If it is real soft then ex Army sand pegs of various sizes are also useful but they dont like hitting stones, esp the alloy ones
My Deltas are good for soft ground where longer pegs (like my sand ones or big ripples) struggle to go in deep enough
Yet to try screw in pegs but reckon I need some to have a play
One way that can work well is to 'cross peg' - ie use 2 shorter pegs at the same peg point put knocked in at different angles. Or 'double peg' - ie use 2 pegs normally side by side and open up the guy line loop to go round both. And dont forget the claw hammer to get them out if the peg puller isnt helping
We use Deltas for the guy's and 10mm wire pegs for the flysheet bought from Calander Carvans in Carnforth at 20p each there an absolute bargain never bent one in 5 years camping.
We have a good selection of pegs, but this weekend with strong winds and soft ground the lifesavers were the delta pegs on the guy lines. They are definitely a worthwhile purchase.
I use this type of peg for all pegging points and guy ropes.
Threaded so they grip well in the ground but can be screwed out if stuck hard. Double hooked so there is something to hook the peg extractor into. The plastic head is below the striking head so should not break (unless you miss). Will not bend and will go through just about any surface. I use a small lump hammer to whack them in.
