OK, this may sound like a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway.

We bought 2 battery lanterns (with bulbs) from Wilkos earlier in the year and they were hopeless. Terrrible design on the switch meant they could be (and were) left on. And thats after a dozen goes and getting them to work properly in the first place.

So we then treated ourselves to 2 wind up LED lanterns. Not cheapy ones, but not the £35 ones, just a happy medium. They are nice and compact, but the light output is terrible. Resting them on the table to play card, ie upclose, its barely worth having them.

So we need a new light source. Flourescent U lamps lanterns looks like the best option, but we wanted to leave them in the camper and not have to bother with batteries. So my thoughts turned to the Uco candle lamps. They appeal to me as they are a bit retro with a modern twist. And a proper candle light will be perfect.

The only problem is that we have 3 small children (under 8) and my wife hates the idea of a flame or the chance of hot wax being around.

So are her fears real? I would assume the top of the lantern gets wam, possibly hot-ish, but do they get scalding hot? And do they actually drip wax, or am I right in thinking that the wax burns off?

Not sure we can afford two, so looks like we may have to rely on the wind up LED lamps for a bit of ambient light and then use the Uco for where we need the light.

Should probably mention we have a Folding Camper with EHU, but we like to spend evenings in or around the awning without plug in lights. And there is something very 'camping' about having a lit lantern.

So any comments on the Uco, or even recomendations of others? As we are now looking at buying our third light source then we are really not prepaired to spend too much. Unless its a worthwhile spend.

I've got 2 UCO candle lanterns that I've had for years - they are rather beautiful little things but not half as useful as you might think!

The top gets really hot - you can boil a cup of water on it according to the manufacturer but I wouldn't fancy trying to balance anything on top of one! It gets hot within seconds of lighting the candle as one of my fingers found out the first time I used it

Wax isn't a problem, the special candles burn literally down to nothing but the metal disc at the bottom. I've knocked ours over before (when lit) and the candle has gone out and the hot wax has all stayed inside the glass bit - bit of a bugger to clean but could be a lot worse!

The lantern packs down really small but the small diameter of the base means it's not really stable enough to use freestanding - would be improved enormously if you got some sort of stand with it, something like the one you get with the Coleman Northstar (but smaller obviously!) would be perfect. We usually hang ours up.

Another big niggle is that they are NOT windproof. Anything more than the slightest breeze and they go out! In fact you don't need to slide the glass down to extinguish it, you can just blow down the vents at the top.

Probably the biggest thing to note is the amount of light they give off - it's not a lot. To be honest I don't think you get any more light than you would from just a candle. The reflectors help but even then the only way you could use it for reading by is if you had your book right next to the lantern.

I've also got the neoprene case which I'd say is a must along with the top reflector - this makes the overall cost pretty high. I love mine for the neat design and natural light but have to say it's been a while since I bothered with them.

For the cost involved you could get a gas lantern which would do what you want or the cheaper option would be a hurricane lantern - both of these give off a nice light but involve burning something so you would need to make sure they were well out of the way of the kids. Saying that we were all sat around my Coleman Northstar a couple of weekends ago and I told my nieces and nephews in detail what horrible things would happen if they went near it and that kept them at a good distance! Would never leave my lantern unsupervised anyway.

Sorry for the mahoosive post, hope it helps!

Thanks for that.
I'll possibly try a UFO, but thought I would enquire about the UCO first.
