went and picked up our new tent today(first tent actually) , and got looking at double burners. we both liked the coleman chef on legs , not sure about the grill though.would only use it for toast, so would i be better off buying one of those toaster gadgets and save some money on a no grill cooker.what are your thoughts on this , or better still , experiences on either set up. not in a rush to buy either , but want to get it right . cheers    steve

Get one with a grill. I have never seen a good word about those toaster thingies. They seem to be evryones worst buy ever.

Alan, I think you're thinking of the circular "pyramid" ones. The folding ones are much quicker (possibly even quicker than a grill) and easier to use. That said, the mesh does burn through eventually after a lot of use, so I'd agree - get one with a grill.

The trouble is the grills on camping stoves are usually next to useless...

The folding flat toasters are less than £2 from Wilkos and ours has lasted a couple of years already (just don't use on too high a heat). Takes seconds - a real party trick!

We've got the Campingaz Kitchen Extra - comes with all the accessories you need including 2 burners (different outputs), fantastic griddle plate with water tray underneath making it easy to clean, windshields that fold down to become shelves with hanging brackets to support them, integral stand with shelf and adjustable legs that's incredibly stable and avoids a kitchen unit and a storage bag that turns inside out to become a fabric cupboard with another shelf. The cupboard we tend not to use as its fiddly to fit (useful for a longer stay though), but it is excellent for storing and carrying the rest of the unit, including the legs that are attached by velcro staps underneath.

Its worth noting that the accessories are not available as extras, so if you think you might want them its best to get the whole thing. Shop around as you can get it for about £50-£60 rather than the RRP which is over £100. As it saves kitchen units etc, its a bargain.

Bought this a few weeks ago to replace my 18 year old similar design one, excellent I use the grill a lot, sometimes just to keep things warm and I can also keep pots simmering ontop of it,(like an extra ring). Also it folds down really slim for space saving.

Bought it from a link posted on here, this is a great forum for bargain hunting,

Also fast delivery, excellent service from Justkampers

We have a grill on ours, but found it takes AGES to toast. I have used it keep food warm wrapped in foil if I am waiting for something else to cook.

Hubbie came up with a good idea when we used it toast garlic slices. He put the grill tray on our upturned frying pan, which brought the tray nearer to the heat and the bread toasted much quicker. Needed to keep an eye on it though as not to burn it!! Did the job nicely.

If I was buying another I would not say a grill is essential - but I would probably get one with a grill on it as a handy "just incase" feature.

This is the benefit of being on a really good website. After reading all the threads about what to buy and what not to buy we have used the reference form the BOWIES thread at JUSTKAMPERS. We have logged in and used this site to purchase the camping cooker set they mentioned. So thanks to the BOWIES.

I've got a Campingaz Camping Chef and the grill is next to useless. The most use I've got out of it is warming the flour tortillas for our fajitas.
I tried it for toast once and it was next to useless.
I use a folding toaster on the gas burner now.
I vote 'don't bother'.

We've also got a Campingaz Camping Chef and the grill is pretty good!!
You can only do one slice at a time, but it is really quite quick.
The only problem was that last time we used it was in a bit of a breeze and the flame kept blowing out. It would have been even quicker if we had had some protection from the wind. One thing i've seen in someone's gallery photos was to put some foil along the sides as a wind break.
Great idea whoever it was!

we have just learnt to do without toast when we go camping as that is all we ever used the grill for on our old cooker, now we just have two of the 1 burner stoves and they are perfect for what we need as we dont like lugging a gas bottle around with us.
