Hello my fellow campers!

Today i have gone out and brought a Campingaz Lumogaz Plus gas light from Blacks! its on offer at £14.99 instead of £19.99 although my girl friend works for Milets so I get a cool 30% staff discount off everything from Blacks and Millets!

The thing is today i thought it would be a great idea to get it ready for my great camping trip to santa pod in a few weeks so i took the globe off lit the mantle (gas off) let it burn out and then when i went to put the globe back on i touched the dam mantle and mad a nice big hole in the dam mantle so now i need to buy some more!

My question is (sorry for the story) can i put the mantle on then put the globe on then burn the mantle out?

It's more difficult with the globe on due to the reduced space to move, but it doesn't do any harm.
Just be careful not to hit the mantle with the match once you've lit it!

would i be able to light it from the top? would it burn out to the bottom?

If you blow it gently, the red glow spreads all over the mantle and burns it evenly.
Left to its own devices, it would probably just burn the top.

these are nice once they are lit, so much better than LEDs

always light ours with the globe on but the metal lid open, a long nosed lighter makes it easy enough though very occasionally had a flare so always do it outside

the problem is getting the hinged metal lid back on as I invariably burn my fingers, or the T towel

just one more reason to go to a Coleman Dual Fuel one day, maybe, though near £100 for a lantern is barking

I don't know where you are buying from but the single mantles are on average between £44-55 and the doubles 50-60

I've had mine for about 10 years now best bit of kit I ever bought!!

I have the Coleman Dual Fuel. Had it for yonks. It sits on the garage floor unused.

I just cannot see the point of a lantern that every time it is moved from one site to the next, it mean having to replace the mantle.

A great light in a static position but usless for touring.

I have a Coleman storage box and it also travels in the camper and never the trailer so is better protected

I found that a small padded bag - like a miniature coolbag - keeps the lantern and other bits safe and sound when being transported. Our lantern has lasted 5 years on its first mantle, despite being carted around the countryside.

Similarly, our new Northstar propane, which comes with its own padded bag, survived its maiden trip of over 2000 miles and the tender mercies of the Zorro clan without damage.

I keep mine in its original box. Been all over the place with it for years and never had trouble with the mantle.

If you can direct me to a single mantle for £45 that would be most excellent - I assume it is almost as good as Northstar for less than half the money

We have a Petromax pressure-paraffin lamp that gives out 400W (about 500 candle power) which is twice what the Coleman NorthStar puts out. It runs for about 8 hours on a litre of Paraffin. Now you ARE talking about £100 for one of these bad boys but they are solid brass and will last more than a lifetime... lots of folk hand them down to their childen.

Anyhow... mantles...

Yes, they are fragile once burnt-in, but as people point out they can be preserved by careful transportation. Our CampingGaz lamp is two years old and still on its original mantle. We store it in its carry case with padding around it. The big Petromax has a mantle support system fitted that minimises breakages of these large mantles but it still breaks if we transport the lamp in the trailer. We now transport it in the car (swapping something less fragile out to the trailer) and all is well.

Regarding the burning-in of a new mantle...

Once you have put the new mantle on, it is much better to leave the glass off and light the mantle using a match from below. If any parts of the mantle do not burn then carefully re-light them with another match. Once you have a nicely burnt mantle, turn the gas on and light... POP and the mantle takes a nice round shape and voila!!

VERY VERY carefully replace the glass globe and you're done... enjoy
