Hi all, newbie to camping but want to continue, hence the question. I have an old school vw camper and want to buy my friends quest 3 way fridge because a couple of times weve been out and the small cooler box we use has drained the leisure battery. However, i'm not sure if using a gas fridge is safe inside the van overnight whilst we sleep. I've just bought an awning to go on the side of the van, would it be better in there?. What if my daughter and her partner want to sleep in the awning? would it be safe? Am I worrying over nothing?

Paul, thanks for that. Read through it but not really convinced it addressed my issue much. Would like further views if anyone has any

I think it would either need to be permanently fitted in the van with a sealed vent to outside, or used outside both van and (occupied) awning.     Might be simpler to run it from EHU where available.

Hi cabbie,  It is inadvisable to use a chest type freezer on gas in an enclosed space such as a camper van.  When fridges are fitted in caravans and campers they vent to the outside and should be sealed around the sides to prevent gas from entering the living area.  Provided the fridge is placed where their is good ventilation it may be OK to use it in the awning.

Regards Bob

Would you have the option to run it off the EHU when you had someone sleeping in the awning and use it on gas (still in the awning) the rest of the time?

As to whether it would be okay to use it in the awning well, it depends on the awning and where they're sleeping. If for example you had a groundsheet down, fully tucked in stormflaps, minimal ventilation and folk sleeping right next to the fridge then maybe not. However if they were sleepind say inside a pup tent on grass with the awning more like a draughty porch than a proper tent I shouldn't think you'd have any problems.

You can get carbon monoxide monitors easily and cheaply btw.

Thanks peeps. Think the awning (draughty) would be ok, best not use it in the van overnight, just during the day if we arent in it. Yes, will use EHU where poss, cheaper as well but on the odd occassion when gas is required will have to use discretion. Don't want to wake up dead

All 3 way fridges fitted into a vehicle need to be vented to the outside, no "ifs" or "buts". They can be used under an awning but it would be inadvisable for some-one to sleep in there as well.

Run it on a hook-up and you will be OK but definitely not on gas

If you look at many caravans they have the vent for the fridge on the awning side of the caravan, so when running on gas the fridge vents into the awning.

Personally, having nearly lost my wife to a carbon monoxide leak from a gas fire in our house, I would tread carefully. But if caravan manufacturers vent the gas fridge into the awning then I guess you would be OK to use a chest type on gas inside an awning.

I would not use one inside a vehicle due to insufficient ventilation.

If the fridge isn't starved of oxygen, the amount of carbon monoxide produced would be extremely small, as the gas flame is only like a pilot light and carbon dioxide is the main waste gas. Awnings usually have plenty of ventilation, so it shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't risk it in the van, as they are nowhere near as draughty as an awning and could produce more monoxide.

I would also consider switching the fridge off overnight if running on gas, then you will know there should be no carbon monoxide leaks. I don't think anything will get too warm overnight (unless you are in the Sahara desert).

The trouble with getting it right first time is nobody appreciates how difficult it is!

Thanks again, think turning it off overnight is the safest bet. Will experiment at home to see how much it warms up overnight rather than waiting till its too late.
