I got the Compacks DVD player from Woolworths.  It seems to work very well and is quite compact.  My new LOGIK LCD TV sits on it fine and they look as if they are both part of the same system.

Do these DVD's run on 12 volt or do they have a internal battery? I want one that does not work only on its own battery. My mate has one but it only runs for about 2hours on its own internal battery.. Not good if your out, and the film is 2 hour plus and the DVD player needs mains to recharge.  not fully portable really.

The Compacks DVD player runs on 240 v only . I run mine off a 300w inverter ( converts 12v into 240v ). Im very impressed by the size of the player , its very slim & will play any region disc & all copies . Mainly use it for the kids to watch Dvds in the caravan on a rally on  Saturday night whilst us adults indulge in the odd beverage & chat ...

Ok it runs on 240v, well if no one come up with a 12v one then i guess an inverter is the way. Anyone know of a 12v unit?

We have a 12v LCD tv, it  would be nice to have a 12v DVD so the kids can watch films on the go or in the tent, if i can't get a 12v unit then i guess a low powered inverter would do the trick eg, 150 watt. If its just for a small portable DVD player that won't use much power.

Hi, we have just bought one from argos at £149.99 & £10 voucher back making it even cheaper.

it runs on either mains, 12v cigerette lighter or it's own rechargable battery pack which lasts roughly 2hrs.  it can also be used with a television as a standard dvd player and comes with a carry bag/ car mounting (to attach to a headrest)

we have found it to be very good and versatile.

My LCD TV is a LOGIK 14" £177.99 from Currys or Dixons (only, it seems).  Besides being cheaper than most it is a very neat, compact design (with remote, teletext, various sockets) and seems OK to me, but I have no former knowledge of LCD.  The only drawback I have found so far is that although it runs on 12volt it does so via a mains lead.  In case I do not have a mains supply I have checked that it works OK with my inverter.  Also, there is a firm in the process of producing a 12v regulated supply cable which I intend to get info on when launched.

Again, I dont know much about DVD players but my understanding is there are two main types.  The 'domestic' type like mine which runs off  mains supply and uses a TV (but can be large like a VHS recorder or somewhat smaller like ones from Woolworths and Asda), and the portable type which has its own built in (small) screen, many of which are intended to be used in (the back of) a car.  I guess these have their own battries but it seems likely that some would have a 12v socket ?  They are dearer than the type I have just bought which are now around £30 to £40.

Ours is similar to livvy3's.  I find this very versitile - although I've not used it in the car.  OK when we were away for a week in the summer we went for electric hook up - but not all sites offer this to tents.  Having its own battery means that it can be used without mains power.  Apparently this battery can be charged from the car battery, although I've not tried this.
Although I wouldn't use it all the time when camping they can be a wonderful thing especially if the weather is bad.    Saved my day a couple of time this summer when the rain was a tad on the heavy side.  (Camp with two young kids.)

Some of the bigger B&Q stores have portable dvd players in at the moment priced around £150. I think they are duel voltage as the screen is seperate to the player and they are sold as in car dvd players.

A few weeks ago we bought a portable DVD player from Sainsburys. It's made by a company called Plustron. It plays all DVD's, CD's CDR etc and it runs off either mains or 12volt. It only cost £39.99. We've been really pleased with it.
