My recommendation would be to go for a 4 season sleeping bag or a good range 3 seaon with a fleecy liner. Look at the comfort range as well as the extreme temperature given (these are independently assessed although the methodology isn't perfect). The extreme is a hyperthermia temperature guide with woolly hat, gloves etc, so the comfort range is more applicable to look at. Remember in the summer a 4 season bag will be very warm!!!

Millets Adventurer 300 (is 3 season but comfort -2 to +25, extreme -15) - one of the best comfort ranges for a 3 season bag we found without going silly on the price. If we are cold camping we also have Gelert fleecy sleeping bag liners to add an extra season. We have camped already in the ones we got in Millets sale (on a 2 for 1 deal) and we are very impressed. Out perform our old Vango Wilderness 350s. If you get one right hand zipped bag and one left hand zipped bag they can be zipped together, with only the toe end separate.

Just as a note - sleeping bags with straight through seaming, rather than staggering seams throughout the layers, will be colder, as will rectangular bags rather than mummy bags and those without insulation over your shoulders, head and zips.

Hi Jonty when i was looking for a sleeping bag on at Millets i stumbled accross this guide which i thought was pretty helpful , i think they have got another four or five guides on sleeping bags on the site as well. Me and my wife have Coleman Callisto Sleeping bags which i highly recommend but i dont have a double so cant recommend one sorry. Hope the other bits were helpful

February camping will require a 4season bag, do not get anything that is cotton lined as this will hold condensation. It will be very hard to get a double that is truly a 4season bag as too much warm air can escape though the gap between two people.

A mummy bag is the best option as you can cover your shoulders with an internal baffle, if you dont like mummy bags cause they are too small(as I didnt) its because you only tried a cheapo, better bags come in XL, or with expanding panels. If you want to stay warm it will cost, but it should last 20 years so for me £100 is money well spent.

Following on from Floggitt's comment. The Millet's bags also have an optional expanding panel you can getif you find you want more space in their mummy bags.

Have to agree on the fishing bags, mine is soooo warm but also has a heat control layer within so if its too hot i lay on top of this extra layer. Not cheap but well worth it.

We both feel the cold had the Vango Wilderness 350s and just changed to pro action jaguar 500s now we are toasty. £29.99 from Argos or £15.00 + postage off Ebay. Double layer is definately worth paying the extra for
