Been using a fire-steel for years, Sorry, can't understand why people can't get them to work and will never understand why campers would use anything else!
Rain, howling gales, snow, it doesn't matter - the firesteel will spark first time every time; one of the greatest things ever invented (and certainly one of the best ever to come out of Sweden!)

I`m with the Bimblers on this. Never fails. Why use anything else. As for using the Swedish army mess kit, Fantastic bit of kit. Tip.. In very cold weather, keep the little bottle of fuel(meths/alchohol) that comes with the kit, in your breast pocket, close to your body. It elevates the temp of the fuel a few degrees and allows it to light easier and vapourize better.

Is that what people in ancient times used to light so they could carry fire with them from one place to another? Think I heard something about that at the Crannog Centre on Loch Tay.
I'm hoping for a firesteel from my brother for my birthday. I've dropped hints so here's hoping.

I think that the fungus that you refer to is one of the Bracket fungi.
