My fridge has stopped working on 240v. Its fine on gas and appears okay on 12v while travelling. When it's on mains and the green switch is lit........when I turn the thermostat knob I hear no clicking on or off. I am thinking that I should hear this. (When I turn my thermostat knob in the house it clicks whether the heating is on or off) So if I am on the right track does anyone know the answer. Is the thermo. switch behind the knob? Is it an easy job?? Am I lucky enough to hear from a knowledgeable forum user???

Will likely be the element or the thermostat.

If you take the fridge out a bit you can test the element and the thermostat with a meter.

A good element will be around 440 ohms, a duff one infinity. Measure across the 2 wires going to it.

To test the thermostat remove the controls cover and put the meter across the connections. Turning to a higher number the meter should go to zero ohms, going lower should read infinity.

Thank you Jennifer. I've managed to get the fridge out of its cabinet. What a struggle. Its been in there ten years I suppose it didn't want to be disturbed. Out to beg borrow or steal, no not steal, a meter Saturday. Will keep my progress posted

Might just need a good hoovering!

Also try setting the switches differently. I had difficulty with mine. Worked on electric one trip, the next, it worked on gas, then it took me forever to get the switches set right to work back on electric again!

Hi Jennifer. Yes I have and although I didn't get the readings that I thought I should, I am not sure how to read a digital meter correctly I think, I got a 'complete circuit' reading from the 12v heater element and an 'incomplete reading' from the 240v one. So that is the course that I took. I ordered the heater element, just under £30 and it was despatched to me today. The readings I got from the thermostat seemed to indicate that it was okay. I'll let you know.

All done and dusted as 'they' say. The new element is in place and the fridge works well. The replacement of the element is one of the easy parts of the operation. I'm leaving the setup in the garage until the weekend just to make sure that all is well and then the job of replacing it in the cabinet will commence. A few choice words to the fridge and the hole that it goes into before I do this will ensure a successful ending. Thank you.

Well done!

When you replace it, make sure it is sealed properly at the back to direct the heat and combustion products (on gas operation) out through the vents.

A good installation should not allow any draughts into the van, or a build-up of heat at the rear of the appliance.
