Hi all again!

Ok we have noticed that there is no aerial fitted to the van & that is something that we cannot live without! So my question is....is it an exspensive to have one fitted on top of the van (1996 Abbey Expression) or would i need one of those free standing ones that attach to the front of the van?

Cheaper option and best I think is a free standing one pick them up cheap and jury rig a pole system from old poles found in most camping stores. Aerials are all different prices personally went for a chepo Argos digital job does the trick for us.

We have a standard aerial on a pole that fits on the jockey wheel. I certainly wouldn't fit a "status" type aerial to the roof and I don't find they are very good anyway.

I actually find the Status on my Bailey works very well, but I'm not sure I'd retrofit one (they're not cheap).

An external aerial, pole mounted on the jockey (for example) would actually be the most cost effective route and will arguably provide better reception too.

Thankyou all for taking the time to read my post & reply! It looks like it will be a external aerial fitted to the jockey wheel (which we are hoping is going to be an easy enough job). Dont go to far as no doubt we will be back asking plenty more questions to all of you lovely people on here :-)

The ariels that are in the roof  that you can move about are absolutley fine and work very well indeed. It saves lugging a bloomin' great pole around !

You dont need a pole, arials like the Image 530/18 come with clips that fasten them to the rail(s) on the offside of the van. Thats what we used with the Bailey, it was only when we changed to the Challenger that we bought a three section pole.

We have the 2 poles that fit on the awning rail on either side of van depending if you have awning up or not, only once have we had prob with status aerial other than that we get freeview no bother but cant bring myself to leave ordinary aerial at home just in case sods law and all that,if you decide to fit status aerial i think id have it done professionaly then at least you are covered if its not sealed properly and you get damp in also bear in mind how long will you be keeping the van to make it worth the cost

I'm suprised that a status is Not fitted to a 96 van. I suspect its been removed as the flying saucer type is no dam good any way . Best bet,as others say,is to buy a good standard broadband ariel suitable for digital reception & pole mount it

The newer type directional status is excellent but I am not sure if I would go to the trouble of making a hole in the roof just to get one fitted.  The one we have in the current van works really well.  In the last van we used sat dish and freesat box which worked really well and with satellite you can get a signal in remote areas where there isn't a terrestial signal.

I have a freestanding one on suckers which I originally bought for my campervan. Now changed to a caravan, but find the aerial I bought still works better than a lot of others!

I think you can see it in my profile, on the third pic at the back of the roof - I just chuck it on the roof (stays there because of the suckers) and point it in the direction everyone else's is pointing!

Never had a problem and picks up all the freeview signals as well.
