Are you talking about the stem into the 'blue' base top part?
If so, yes it can be removed so that the all the component parts (such as base, grills, lids etc.. can be stored together in the round bag,).
The tripod legs then fold away into a smaller bag (A bit more tricky due to the gas pipe).
Be carefull when removing the top from the legs, try not to twist too much. There is a small vent inside the stem tube that can be closed if you rotate the legs against the stem.
Best to get someone to help you, and if it's stuck, a little WD will help to loosen.
