I love 'proper' wooden furniture. I have collected various plastic-and-tube folding chairs over the years but my favourite is an old wood-and-canvas 'director' folding chair. I'm also restoring a hardwood fold-up camp table in time for the coming season. These two items will make a nice retro-looking set (although they are heavier and bulkier than the modern equivalents).

It’s nice to know there is a fellow wood lover out there. I am looking forward to seeing your table when you have finished it. Will it be ready for March?
I am determined to swap all of my alloy/plastic stuff for wood, and even though I have quite a few items around the house that I can use, I’m am soooo looking forward to making or restoring some pieces as well (I love working with wood). Funny that you should mention the directors chair - I have one that I have removed the canvas from, and I am currently on the look out for some lovely recycled leather to replace it with.

Below are a couple of photos of the table I am restoring: you can clearly see how faded the table-top slats had become. Each slat is being removed in turn, planed off and sanded then treated with teak oil. The slats were fixed with steel screws that had rusted - it wasn't easy getting them out and I'll replace them with brass screws.

There's also a photo of my director's chair.

Is anyone else into wooden camping furniture?

Only for firewood.

Joking apart,I would think the weight aspect puts many people off and then there's the maintenance aspect

Interesting!

I know a couple of years back when I was camping on a (very) wooded site I got permission from the site owner to scavenge some branches etc.

Ball of string & an afternoon sitting there with my steaming coffee mug & the radio on low & I'd fashioned a washing up stand & a table type affair, just like we used to make in Guides! (Back in the 19mumbles).

Pals of mine have wooden stools (3 legged type) and a beautifully crafted pair of seats - like 2 ladderbacks that slot together, but lie flat in the car?

I used to take a wooden directors chair camping (with green canvas to match the tent) up until I got my (green) Lafuma last spring - the directors chair has been relegated back to a garden chair now with it's five matching mates. I've also got a wooden table like yours, it was one my mum bought for picnics back in the 60's. I remember that mum covered the top with fablon so it would be easy to wipe over

I pulled a wooden table very similar to yours out of the bins at Waterside House campsite four years ago. The was nothing wrong with it, and I used it for a couple more years until it collapsed whilst being used as a ladder. I liked it so much, that I stripped it down and reassembled it with screws and glue. Mine was fitted together with small wire pins originally. If I found a directors chair at a car boot, I would go for it.

Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.

I have 4 wooden directors chairs which we use in the awning to sit on when we have our meals.  I got them from camping and general in Southend on Sea.  Got them in 1994 have rubbed them down and given them a coat of yacht varnish.

My parents had some really old wooden directors chairs. They probably dated from the early thirties, but someone (me...sorry) painted one blue and one red in the nineties and put some stripey canvas on them. Still they were on their way to the skip when I tarted them up.

I'd use them for camping only they take up too much room in the car. I'm a roofboxless and trailerless camper so space is an issue for me, and I've got two teenagers and all associated stuff to take in one little hatchback.

I have a wooden tray on legs, the type you have your breakfast in bed. I take it camping as it makes a great low table, and it's got a big surface area so it's useful for food preparation etc.

Thats reminded me, nothing to do with wooden camping gear but I have a plastic tray table from ikea that we could use. Bought it to put laptop on in the summer as it gets too hot on my lap. We too don't have a roofbox or trailer either so will def take it with us as it is flat. We can use it for drinks or food prep like you said. Thanks Victoria1!
