For a new camper I would defimitely recommend a tunnel tent over an X shape.

Much easier and quicker to set up , more likely to fit on a standard size pitch too.Lots of sites charge extra for the big sprawling ones .

More usable space in a tunnel type (IMHO)

Easier to get the tent into the right shape, probably only 5 or 6 poles may even be all the same size , as opposed to several different sized ones with a multi podded type .

Far more adjusting and pegging needed with the x shape ones with the bedrooms coming off in all directions.

(Yes I have had both types )
With practise you can have an 8 berth tunnel tent up and pegged with 2 people in 20 minutes (take 2 mallets )
whichever type you go for , try to view it first , go for one with big windows, nothing worse than being zipped up inside in the wet, with no view of outside.

Hi,

I would recommend the Coleman Mackenzie Cabin 6 tent which won the family tent of the year award last year. It is very spacious and comfortably fits six people and the camping equipment and shouldn't have any problems fitting the car and tent in a standard pitch size.

You can also add sun canopy's and side extensions on to the tent if you wanted to make it slightly larger.

They are also very easy to put up, we generally get ours pitched and pegged out in under thirty minutes.

the reviews for the tent on here are very good and they seem to be retailing around the £300 mark now.

Good luck with purchasing your new tent, hope you have lots of fun with it

Hi Beefysmum & littlesilvervw

I am new to this site and wandered off to another thread.  Thanks a mill for your posts.  I went for the Khyam Ontario 8 which arrived last week but haven't had a chance to put it up yet.  The 5 sleeping bags arrived yesterday and I will have to stop shopping or we will run out of space and won't make it out of the garden!

By the way incase anyone else is looking for a tent I got the tent, porch, carpet and footprint for £316 on the khyam website which I think is a good deal.

Thanks again,

Paula.

hi Campingsos

that is a very good deal to get all that included, and the reviews on the tent are very good and Khyam are a very good brand of tent offering a good range of accessories and spares which are easily available.

Just don't tell my other half or she will be buying one, i lost count of how many tents we have after the 10th one!!! lol

Hope you have a good time camping
