Probably the best thing to do would be to get a local electrician to look at it and also give it a PAT test (a safety test to ensure it is wired correctly and is generally safe). Sadly electricity can be unforgiving, the adaptor could be incorrectly wired, I have had brand new kit that has faults so I always double check myself. If you are not sure about how to fix it you should get a pro to have a look.
You could also check the fuse in the adapter(it may have blown) and also that the circuit breaker and RCD on the unit are switched on. I have been caught out by unfamiliar RCD's which need resetting in a particular way.
However, I will reiterate that it is best to have it professionally checked. Look for a small electrical shop (if you are lucky enough to still have one locally) or an electrical supplier (they are often very experienced). It is unlikely to cost very much for them to have a quick look.
