Yep the bent wire thing is for the lid to sit on , do not try to place the lid into position using just the handle , grasp the side of the lid ( glass bit ) using oven gloves before tipping it up to place on the stand .
When in the stand correctly the lid handle should point downwards , if you place it on the stand the other way round it places stress on the glass .
