I am currentley looking at getting a Coleman Single mantle lantern for when we go camping,for a good light source at night and so it gives a little heat inside the tent (as going to go away end of february).However I was wanting to know if a two Mantle or any other type are slightly better for the job?

I wouldn't use a petrol lantern inside a tent for a source of heat. Dangerous fumes don't ya know! Keep it for outside and stay alive.

We've used a 206 gaz lantern inside our tent lot's of times, and we're still alive - I think. Well I haven't seen our names in the 'deaths' section of our local paper, so we must still be alive

The duel fuel lantern doesnt give off any fumes. Its as safe as gas lanterns in the tent. Common Sense and Ventilation and you should be fine. We use 2 gas lanterns in our Norfolk Lake when we camp without electricity (which is more often than with EHU) Havent woken up dead yet!

In this modern age, there is no real need for fueled lamps imho, although I myself do have a Bialaddin 300X pressure parafin lamp, lamp that gives a lovely retro glow, and also a more modern CampinGaz LumoGaz RPZ that has electronic ignition, the lamp simply screws onto the refillable 901 CampinGaz cylinders.

But with the high power LED lamps that you can get today, along with re-chargeable batteries, why bother with the faff of fueled lamps, as nice as they are for the kind of light they give, to my mind the practicalness of LED outweighs these retro benefits.

A bizare stat is that many folk, mostly kids, die from fueled lamp incidents in Africa each year, but not from fire, but due to acidentaly drinking the fuel!.

Oh right, burning petrol doesn't give off carbon monoxide then!? Coleman must be wrong on their instructions then not to use their petrol products indoors or confined spaces due to risk of fumes. But hay, you must know best dezzie to possibly put peoples lives at risk....

Numerous times in the past we have used Gaz lamps and more recently a coleman petrol lamp in our tents. They both do give off fumes but as long as you are sensible to maintain some ventilation (our tent did NOT have a SIG) and not leave it on overnight i.e. unattended there is no reason to assume there will be problems.

hi there i have a coleman with two mantles ,it will give out twice as much lite ,but use more fuel also ,i have a chrome reflecter that fit around about a third of the glass ,and it realy does divert the light to where u want it instead of all around it ,

Thanks for all your replies. Although Im going to be using for a little heat,Im not going to leave on all night in the tent. We have a big (well it is for just us two) area where we sit in the tent and will only have it on when it gets dark to going to bed.Now just to find the best price.Thanks again.
