Hi everyone

I recently ordered a gelert 10cm deep self inflating mattress for my daughter when we go camping. I have to say I am very impressed with it.

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me the best way to store it? It comes with a bag and straps to keep it rolled up but I have heard they should be stored unrolled and with the valve open. Surely this means it would be permanently inflated??

Sorry for sounding so dense this camping malarky is all new to me!

Yes, the best way to store SIMs is to have them flat (unrolled), with the valves open. We store our Thermarests like this, it makes it quicker for them to self-inflate upon next use, apparently.

We've always stored ours this way as well, I think it does make them inflate better.  Ours live under our bed.

Inflated is its natural state. It's not under any stress when it is inflated. All it is is a piece of "memory" foam with an airtight cover and a valve. When it's rolled up the foam can have a tendency to lose its "memory", i.e. its natural shape, which is why they sometimes take longer to inflate if they are stored like that.

Hmmm, interesting question. I've never seen any conclusive independent evidence either way nor do I recall seeing any recommendations from manufacturers.

However, as the other posts say, the received wisdom is that SIMs are better stored flat at their natural level of inflation.

I have stored them both ways (dependent on the space available in the loft or under the bed) and they seem to self-inflate from rolled more readily the more time they have spent in their expanded shape. That said, I usually help them on their way by blowing into the valve after the initial 'rush' of self-inflation.

Given enough space, my inclination is to store them expanded - but, as I say, I have seen no compelling arguments one way or the other.

One thing to consider is that if a SIM is stored rolled in a stuffsack it will not only keep cleaner but will be instantly ready to pack for a camping trip.

Alpkit specifically recommend storing inflated with the valve open. I believe Thermarest also provide the same guidance with their mats, although I can't find a FAQ on their website.

Alpkit Self-Inflating Mat FAQ

This is an ostensibly independent guide but smacks of a manufacturer spiel ...

The general advice given, is to store your SIM open, fact is it may a been in the shop, tightly rolled up for a year or two, so why.

Well they say the SIM will be easair to deploy, if having been stored open, which is probably true, storing them rolled up I don't think will do any harm, in fact my two "ThermaRest DreamTime XL's" have remained roled up since getting back from holiday last July. but I will laying them out this weekend, to give them time to be ready for this years summer camps.

I have always stored mine rolled up with no problems.
It would also take up quite a lot of room if stored or carried flat
