In my wisdom when out camping last year......
On running out of water I decided it would be a good idea to boil up milk in the kettle for a milky coffee... Now 12 months later having not bothered my are cleaning it.... There is a heavy scum on the inside if the kettle as you would imagine.... Question is.... How do I get rid... I have tried baking soda, boiling water and fairy liquid to no avail although it's getting slightly better.... My mrs says try coke in it?? Any ideas out there?
Thanks

Given that supermarkets sell kettles these days for not much more than it would cost for the discarded Coke, I think I'd just buy a new camping kettle.

Bin it and get a new one, supermarkets' own brand ones are dirt cheap now and it'll save a load of messing about.

I'd just let it boil and simmer with washing up liquid in it. Almost free.

I'd rather try and clean it than bin it! The coke is in it as I type and has been there for 9 hrs now! I put some washing powder and boiled some water up and then had an epiphany.... I put coins into the kettle and started moving them around inside it... Worked a treat! The coins abrasiveness being moved around scraped off loads of scum! Will empty the coke out later and see if that's got the last off :)

Good thinking with the coins Peter.

If Coke can dissolve boiled-hard milk (and can bring coins up like new) just imagine what it can do to your teeth or the lining of your stomach. I'd never drink the stuff - to me, it's a vile sickly-tasting concoction of sugar and dilute phosphoric acid.

In fact, there is so much phosphoric acid in Coke that you can use it as a flux for low-melt soldering of brass sheet. The main problem is that the workpiece gets stained by the burnt-on sugar residue. This is true; I've actually done it.

You need to shift the limescale that's absorbed the milk. I always use citric acid crystals from the home brew section of the supermarket or Boots - cheap and effective

People don't keep coke in their mouths for nine hours though, in most cases when drinking it'll barely touch your teeth, so don't panic peeps lol, crisps on the other hand.............teeth killer.

....and finally after adding the washpowder, the coke, the steradent and the washing up liquid you will then be asking how to remove the awful soapy taste from water boiled in the kettle so you can make a decent cuppa tea!

The answer you ask..., Simples! it costs £4-99 from Argos and comes brand new in a box with a picture of a kettle on the side!

Yeah, just throw it out for landfill! It's not as if we're trying to reduce our wastage of junk we bury under our countryside that we love to camp in is it?!

I'm a bit of an Eco warrior so if I can mend then I will :) too many people dispose of things too easily IMO. It's taken 10 mins or so and has been good fun in trying to get it sorted :) plus the £5 has been given to one of the kids to Hoover the car out instead of Argos. The kettle will be boiled a few times then Milton will sort out any funny things left in it! Must say I thought the baking soda would have done a better job than it did! The coins was the most productive! And then the coke finished the job!!! Out fishing next weekend and my boat which is known as "the singing kettle" will be reunited with it's namesake!
Thanks guys! I will post up a pic of me having a brew as long as I don't collapse after it!!
