The handles can get very hot during use, and mine are well-scorched due to the wind blowing the fire towards them during the initial charcoal burning (I use instant burning charcoal in bags).
I suspect some peeps had tried to move the BBQ during use without adequate personal protection equipment (as in gloves), and got themselves hurt in the process.
Without the side handles, I would like to believe one is less tempted to move a BBQ during use, therefore, it should be safer.
I was not bothered about the lack of heat shield below the handle on the lid, as I seldom use the lid when I BBQ, at home or otherwise.
However, I can appreciate why it was a H&S concern, and the need to add one etc...
