First let me say hi - I've been lurking here for a while and have learned a lot from this forum.  However, we've finally bought our furst motorhome (a Talbot based Autosleeper Rambler), so I need a little advice!

Our van is fitted with a simple 'Zig' unit which is little more than a fuse box / distribution board (i.e no power supply / charger unit).  We'd like to add a charger / power supply to it so that we can use the vans 12v electrics (lights / pump / blown air heating fan etc) from the hook-up rather than slowly flattening our leisure battery. So a couple of questions:

1. From what I've read on here, I think I'd prefer a Sterling charger / PSU rather than a Zig charger. Could anyone tell me what model would best suit my needs and what the best place to buy it would be?

2. When I've bought it, do I just wire it to the leisure battery terminals (fed from the incoming mains RCD?

Sorry if the above are dumb questions and have been answered before!

best

Matt

Hi Matt

Basically thats it Matt

16a flush mounted Blue socket into van

Then thru RCD and exit via mcb to charger.

The charger (choice) depends on your usage the smaller international unit is 10 amps and would definately be my minimum choice, Sterling do do a 6 amp budget model at around £50, but it loses these features

1 the budget doent have isolated supplies to battery banks it is a single feed on the budget, there are 3 isolated feeds from the international.

2. the budget can only be used on a good 240v supply, the interantional can be used on any voltage from 80 to 400v and any frequency from 40 to 400htz (this means you will always gets a good charge regardless of how poor the supply is !.

3. the budget is only 3 stage were the international is 4 stage.

George

Thanks for the replies everyone - looks like a Christmas present for the van is on the way!

One thing - cara medic - could you tell me what a kt12 charger is? (sorry, I'm new to this game!)

best

Matt

Jump in here, the KT12 is not a charger but a 12 volt power supply and as Caramedic says "will do the job" if your needs are for 'hook up'.  This type of 'charger' will supply all your needs as it will run happily even without a battery. Not sure KT12 is a current model but it is/was made by CEC Plug in Systems of Hull, they are the main suppliers to the caravan/motorhome industry and will have a current model to suit. I will always recommend them as they have their own service engineers and if anything goes wrong 'they' will come out to you and put it right, least ways in the UK.
